Hi guys,

I wanted to show you my latest set I have just finished: the Viking Longship!

It's designed for 28-30mm minis when printed at 100% and you can build one or as many ships as you need  :D
Customization options included hull colors, ornaments, shields, sail types and colors, deck detailing structures.
You can go for a quick and simple build or add more detailing or even a rig with some sowing thread!

The "red stripes sail" build was with mast glued in place. The "black/yellow diamonds sail" was built with a removable mast for easy storage. The last pics shows the build with removable bow and stern figureheads (so you can change them if needed) and everything ready for storage in a flat box.

I am thinking about making a smaller faering and a medium knarr ship too. Any interest in that?

Hope you like the pics!
Chris

That looks amazing for just paper. Damn!

I’m definitely interested in the other ships as well. A bit of variety in a fleet would be great!

Just curious, what are the dimensions of the longship? (Length and width?)

thanks you guys for the kind words!

Just curious, what are the dimensions of the longship? (Length and width?)

The bare hull length (without the figureheads) is apx 50cm/20". Add 1-2" with the figureheads, depending on which of the four options you choose.
The width of the deck at the widest is 4".

And speaking of variety ... you can print and build using color modifiers, so even without all the other detailing options you could have a fleet where each ships looks a little different (lighter, darker etc.)

I'll start working on the geometry of the knarr hull then!  :D

Thanks for the information! They’re fairly large models, but should be great for scenarios like boarding actions- I’m picturing using them and some knarrs for to game Norse-on-Norse sea battles.

I designed this Longship with gaming action in mind so I went for the longest that made sense and tried to allow enough deck space for many minis! The good thing with papermodels is that you can print them at other scales than the original 100% so it's very easy to make smaller versions too if you need that variety in your fleet. I would just keep the ornamental parts like the shields and rowing bench/chests at 100% so they still make sense with figures (or whatever your baseline scale would be - would be interesting to see a 15mm figure build printed at 50% for example)

During research I found that they actually came in all sizes. The historical finds very often were huge funeral ship so probably not the average raiding ship :)

And the story continues ... with a Viking Knarr, the trading ship.

Here's a prototype build I made to test the geometry.

I have added these raised deck platform parts so I can have a proper submerged storage deck. Next up is the texture painting and then looking forward to a textured test build!

Here are a couple of pics of the first texture test build. Still a lot of work on (esp the splitting of hull side parts) but it's starting to look like something.

Should be enough space on deck for mini action!

... and also space for cargo in the bay!

Finally a comparison to the Longboat I made.

I want to work on some missing parts and then start the second round fixing all the issues I found while doing this build.

But what do you guys think so far?

I like that a lot! It looks great and will be a very useful size for a number of scenarios. I can imagine them being used in some of the Oathmark scenarios from the first expansion book…. The open cargo hold with removable barrels and crates is clever, too!
