Best window frames (MDF or 3D)?
« on: June 25, 2022, 09:20:28 PM »
Hi everyone! I am considering a project where I will make lots of buildings from scratch. I would like to take a shortcut and purchase 28mm scale window frames, as this will be for modern era buildings. Does anyone have links for good companies that make and ship these, preferably in the U.S.? I am flexible on whether they are MDF or 3D - not attached to either.

I would also be interested in doors/doorframes. I am considering using foam board to build these, so it would be easiest to cut the proper size hole and simply glue these in.

Thanks!

Mike Demana

Have you considered Tichy Train Group: Linky.

I have used some of their O scale windows (quite large for 28mm) but they also make HO/OO and N scale windows and doors.

Do a search for 1/48 dollhouses. There’s a number of manufacturers that make mdf windows and doors.

I bought some fairly cheap MDF ones off eBay for my BSC22 entry and they were spot on. Easy to cut to make different sizes, but I’m in the U.K.

Oh & if you would like a PDF of the doors I will happily send you one, I know it’s not hard to draw up, but just saves you a job  :D

Do you just print them up on paper or card, then attach them? Thanks!

Yes print on card, Here’s the explanation

Started making doors today, 3 down 6 to go  :?

I just realised that I didn’t explain how this all works.

Cut the far right door out around the frame, then cut out the middle door the same, but also cut out the central panels & glue this to the first door & finally cut out the frame on the left & glue this on top of the 2 previous door parts f you then have yourself a recessed door  :D

Do you have a post that shows one inserted into/onto a building? My brain is foggy today and I'm not following  lol

Oh, duc and Codsticker -- great links! I will be ordering some...

Only this

A quick update to my build.
The windows have arrived in quick time (forgot to order the ones for the cat slide dormers though  :? ) , I’ve cut the frame from one side of 2 windows & glued them back together to make the large windows & all the openings have been cut out.
All the tiling has been done on the roof panels & the doors have been made. I can hopefully start some assembly work now  :D

You are welcome. I found this pic of some of the Tichy O scale windows in a building I made; the barrels and boxes are 28mm. I believe the windows are the #2014 double hung windows which are fairly large compared to the other windows in the range.

This may be out of the left field, but I recently saw a thread here on the LAF where the poster used Lego windows and doors.

Think about it: they are polystyrene, so can be glued in with cement, they're consistent, cheap and easily sourceable, and they're functional and very durable! Also, they come in a huge range of styles, types and colours. Many years ago, I had been pondering the use of Lego rolling garage doors; they're in scale (approximately 1/48), strong and probably the only solution that's functional for that type of doors.

I for one am absolutely contemplating using them in future builds. Only moderns though; I feel they might be too straight and precise for historical projects...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
