Replaying scenarios: pros and cons?
« on: June 28, 2022, 01:55:38 PM »
If you do historical refights, do you like to fight same battle more than once, perhaps multiple times? Why / why not?

I do. The latest in my series of "Reflections on Wargaming" discusses the pros and cons here:

I'd be very interested to know others' views on this too.

Sort of yes.  Most likely reason to play the same battle more than once for me is:  A. as a practice run for a convention game to see what tweaks may be needed, and B. gaming mates clamor to play it again either from the practice run or seeing game at a convention and not getting into the game but wanting to.

Otherwise, not so much.  Each game should also push me to get more figures painted to get closer to having them all done.  That means minimum repetition for years and years to come!   ;)

I'd have thought that playing the same scenario from both sides at least once would be sort of standard in historical circles?

Switching sides to get a feel for the battle from both ends. And then possibly multiple times per side; once to reconstruct the actual thing, then doing your best to better the results, and then maybe a few more to iron out the kinks in the tactics involved.

Even in scifi/fantasy circles we tend to do that...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. This got about 100 comments in various places, so I've updated the blog post with a summary of these for those who are interested:
