Hells Well. Alone's BSC entry (now updated 0811)
« on: October 11, 2009, 07:04:42 PM »
Sounds like there is going to be some amazing things made for this, including some big pieces. Can't wait. :)

For my own piece I am planning something smaller, and something I can use in my Call of Cthuhlu games. I have an idea of an old well, that has been used for dark intent opening a doorway to somewhere bad. It stands on an old and ominous hill, surrounded by ominous ruins, near an ominous village, full of ominous people, with ominous ideas and... well you get the idea.

I think there may be some tentacles involved at some point.

Might have to get out a sketch pad out and make some jottings, this will be my first proper scratch build, so trying not to be to ambitious so the village may have to wait, in the background of this pic is the last thing I made, and in the foreground the cultist preparing to open the Hell Well!

Could it be the end of us all?

...no probably not! :D

I like the different take on travelling, my two dimensional brain would never come up with something like that  :)

So I have started at last, and to make it a little harder I am refusing to buy anything to help me with it and only using up some of the 'rubbish' that is cluttering up my house.

SO to that end here are the initial WIP images for you all to have a look at.

So from this I have gone to this

and then to this...

Tonnes to do still, and I think it will need a tree somewhere...

Let me know what you are thinking, and I will keep putting up images as it progresses.

I think I will need to put some base on it as well, it is a little more old and ominous cliff then hill now but I hope you can all forgive that!  ;)

I applaud the totally 'scratch' approach!  :)

I spy a sketch on the table beneath the bits and pieces, any chance that you'll share?  ;)

As you asked nicely... It is more of a scribble then a sketch though :?

I am not sure about the bottom of the well, should I make a set of bases, so i can use it without a portal as well as one with the portal.

I could bore all the way through and have multiple base pieces that drop in to place?
 ??? ??? ???

So here is the new update:

I will have a couple of base pieces one 'normal' well water and the other – portal open beast/monster/outer god/evil essence/pan-dimensional being  emerging, end of the world everyone take a sane test...

...that way the piece is a little more versatile for the game I have in mind.

Here are some more pics for you.

So this is the start of the well, big hole at the moment. I will make the upper part of the well from individual shaped bricks. The internal I think I will be like the bottom left and just shaped and painted.

Here is the test bricks for the well, the ladder rungs and an ominous tree!

Close up of the an ominous tree, or a really small island you decide!
 :)

Looks great so far...will you be making the tentacled beast as a seperate piece?

Thanks for that,

This is my first build of this type and certainly on this scale and for a competition, so it feels like there is a steep learning curve.

The tentacle monster will be on a separate base that will fit through the centre of the well. it is wider at the bottom and flares so when you look in to it an oversize base will fill the view. I plan to do another base with no monster/portal for use as a normal well location or for use before the summoning.

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the project I am building as I keep wanting to add things, and the project expands! That and once I have built the damn thing I still have to paint it! :o

Ahh well, I am too far in to let it go unfinished so by hook or by crook! :)

Last little update for this weekend.

Done more shaving on the structure as a hole, pun intended! Still need to find a base board to put it all on :(  but still that can wait for now. added some stairs, which when finished will be more rustic and worn I prefer them to the slopes that were there, I have done a test stair today and it looks quite cool so pictures to come.

I have also split the well, so you can now see the open chamber at the bottom and added brick work to one side, this wont go back together until painted now, so that will be a wait.

I have made the normal water base and started the portal base, and started the bricks for the actual well top, so only monster to make, well to finish, overall piece to tidy, base and finallise, base coat and paint and detail and I am done!! ;D

Nice
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

Still pushing on.

Here is the well inside with some paint on and the portal plate partially made up, in the cork in the background are the start of some tentacles. Too hung over to do much today...

...here is the start of the beast, and a close up of the inside of the well.

I have now based the main structure, and added the rungs inside the well. i have also partially painted the water insert, but am not totally happy with that.

Need to make up some green stuff and build some more of the monster, just too much enjoying myself 8)

I do need any tips on making bricks though if anyone has any, mine are a little irregular at the moment and are time consuming so any tips at all would be appreciated.

Cheers all
