Barbara Hambly’s Time of the Dark
« on: July 07, 2022, 03:13:03 AM »
I’ve read a lot of Barbara Hambly’s books especially the three books in the Darwath series.  If you’ve read them you’ll understand what I mean when I say The Dark Ones.  Does anyone know if there is a artist’s rendition of a Dark One?  I was thinking of doing a Dragon Rampant game with the Dark Ones as the major bad guys.

Flappy cape like wings with hooks / claws from memory (tis a long time since I read them though). No real body.

A book cover has something that matches my memory https://www.bookbeat.dk/bog/time-dark-224227

Much as I dislike mentioning anything associated with MAR Barker any more, the Tekumel Club's biridlu would is a pretty good match for the descriptions I recall (ie flowing, almost shapeless masses of fluttering darkness with enough sharp bits to shred a human (or a cow) in short order), although probably much bigger than Hambly intended - at $20 I assume that's a pretty big mini.  Be really easy to hand sculpt something smaller but similar out of putty.  Not like you can get the shape wrong.  Could go with something more like a pair of bat wings sans the bat but I'd avoid any suggestion of rigid wing bones - these things could squeeze through tight spaces like an octopus IIRC, and definitely weren't endoskeletal.

Scroll down here to the second listing:

You could probably also do something with converting the various D&D cloaker and/or darkmantle miniatures, or maybe plastic toy mantas or octopuses or both.

Rather liked Hambly's books back in the day.  Her mysteries (which is all she seems to write these days) don't appeal to me quite as much, but they must be much better sellers for her than scifi/fantasy ever was judging by how many she's had published.

This might be an unorthodox portrayal, but something that could work would be using some models from the Nighthaunt line of the Age of Sigmar models.

Depending how they're painted, they could pass for batwing shadowy creatures.

Just to say that I've had some complaints about 'political' type comments regarding this topic. In order to keep to the forum's rules, please keep things gaming related. Thank you all.

Barker's aniti-semitism and authorship of a neo-Nazi novel are, whether you edit this out or not, very much gaming related.  Nothing you or I can do will change that.  But I am done with this site, so you won't have to remove any more of my comments.

And here I thought TMP and Frothers were poisonous.  Feh.

never heard of Hambly - sounds worth a look (am I mixing my bits there ...  ???  :D )

@chief lackey Rich - hope you reconsider; always good to read your very well-informed observations here on the hobby.

given the state of things generally, the mods here do a very decent job of keeping the lid on frothing-at-the-mouth hatemongers etc, and their methods have to be respected, even if you feel you get the short end of the stick on occasion in terms of supressed content?
