1870 Caribbean Alternate history campaign
« on: August 09, 2022, 07:56:26 AM »
Hi, I'm a long time lurker on this forum, so sorry that my first post is requesting assistance.

I'm trying to get my group involved in an Alternate history campaign, however stuck on the following, yes it is an Alternate history but I would like to base starting set up on approximate, historical level.

Does anyone know about or where to find information on British deployment of troops and naval vessels in the Caribbean circa 1870 ,

speculation on changes due to unrest in North America ( Lincoln assassinated earlier, cease fire declared plus other changes, but resumption of hostilities imminent)

Information wanted would be;
No./type British Regulars
No./type Local Regulars
Militia/Garrisons

ShipNo. and  types

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

The Nafziger Collection would my starting point. For example, "Stations of the British Army in 1870" :

The site is clunky, but it looks like p 177 of the finding aid has useful items.

This site has a wealth of information on the RN in the Victorian era. It's a bit of a slog but many, if not most, of the individual ships entries show with which fleet or squadron they were stationed at various times.

Best to start with ship classes, identify the vessels therein and go from there. It should give you a rough idea or at least some sort of starting point Bear in mind that the North America and West Indies Squadron as it was at the time took in a lot of water from Halifax through to Jamaica, so start points could be various, although Bermuda and Halifax were the main stations.

If it's a scenario based on the RN vs the USN it will need to be a quick game. The RN would have rendered the USN to matchsticks in very short order at this point in time.
