Old School Skeleton Cavalry - who makes 'em?
« on: July 14, 2022, 08:22:53 PM »
Help me LAFFERS, you're my only hope...

I've been looking at old citadel skeleton cavalry on Ebay and decided even I'm not stupid enough to pay those prices. :-[

Could anyone suggest a reasonable alternative?
Ideally metal, skeleton horses, and a similar aesthetic to the old late 80s citadel types.

I've looked at Ral Partha, Forlorn Hope, Mirliton, Warmonger and even Black Tree, they all have things that are almost right but... :-I

Any suggestions?

Thanks, they are definitely old school...

To be honest, I'm not a massive Olley fan (heresy I know) and his penchant for pumpkin heads doesn't really work on these.

EDIT: This is the sort of style I'm particularly looking for, 1985 LOTR Dead Men of Dunharrow.

Don't Fenris have some skeletal horsemen in their draugr stuff? Would they be suitable, if they do exist.

Huh, if the Ral Partha Legacy and Mirliton/Grenadier ones don't work for you, I think you're down to EBay prices for those LOTR ones.

@Cat : it's not that they don't work, it's just that they only have one or two and I'd like to see if there was a way I could get half half dozen or so from the same place. If not, I may have to mix and match.

@Voltan : cheers, I'll have a look

It's a bit of a challenge, but I'd be tempted to buy the undead horses from Forlorn Hope (you can get them separately) and try out Oathmark skeletons or revenants as riders. I think they scale quite well with old-school Citadel skeletons.

Another approach might be to try mixing Oathmark undead infantry with Mantic undead horses. The old ones are the dreaded "restic", but the new Egyptian-ish ones are hard plastic, which opens up all kinds of kitbashing opportunities.

Battlezone miniatures have a few skeletal cavalry that may work, see https://www.battlezone-miniatures.co.uk/shop/category/198.

I can only think of Eureka right now. Be sure to get the ones with Ancients-era weapons instead of the black powder-era weapons.

Thanks Bob. Now my avatar is crying!

Cannot recommend avoiding mantic restic horses highly enough. I had a set of their demon knights and I've never found a model fit together worse. The join in 2 parts and neither part has warped the same way the other has. Hot water did very little to solve it and the reins are a single block from ear to ear.. Don't get me started on trying to fit arms into sockets..

If you can 3D print this ones got a similar style and could be scaled suitably : https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-skeleton-chariot-164298

Oh, I never considered Eureka, thanks for that. Do you know if they are one-piece casts or come in bits?

Sorry Robosmith, nothing personal... lol

Now if they weren't sold out and on the other side of the world they'd be perfect!
I will keep an eye on them, but I bet shipping for a small order would be a killer... :?

Satyr stuff is often resold by Ye Alchemist's Hybrid Moiniatures group on facebook
Using a UK based caster iirc
