I will be buyilding a Brigantine from Gary Chalk's plans if that is alowed or does it have to be something you designed yourself?

Thats fine.  The contest is to build something, not design something (although the two often go hand in hand)

That’s a neat idea. I would love to build one myself one day… I certainly lack in motivation lately… not enough sun light I think  ;)

Drink more Calimero, then you won't care that the sun's not out.

Here are some progress pictures. It has been a very enjoyable build and taken much less time than I imagined this far.

More to come later

It is coming along nicely. The decking looks good.

It looks like u used the plans exactly how they were scaled. I found the ship a little too small that way - especially the mid deck.

Yes probably but as a first try at building a ship I chickened out and waent with the plans. I have added a bit of detail at the sterncastle though, doesn't do much for the deckspace but I thought it would look good. Next time I will go for something  more ambitious in space. I found building ships to be both easy and fun so this will not be the last...

Looks great. :-*
Very good work for a first time.

I have one of these made from the original plans and they are not too small.
Very useable, as long as you are not trying to fight huge boarding actions. Great as scaled scenery.

What material did you use for the deck?
And what did you cut it with, to achieve the neat curves?

I am using balsa wood for the decks. As for cutting it I use a fresh blade in a snap-off blade hobby knife. Afterwords I lay the decks together and sand them lightly. Then I scored planks into the deck with a sharp pencil.
More piocs to come during or after the weekend. =)

Decisions, decisions, should I go with  a tiller or a ships wheel? that is the question for the moment...

Very nice decking and looks a better Captain's cabin arrangement than the plans give - had a go at this one myself and it's proved a useful model. I tried adding a bit more sail, the ones in GCs plans seem insubstantial and tiny. It was not an unmitigated success - if you want to see the result it's on the swashbuckling board.

If I was to do another one think I'd try to put a bit of rigging like the excellent mermaid model someone posted recently. It's always going to be a bit of a compromise for playabilities sake I suppose, but dang it ropes and sails make a real difference to the feel of the thing.
