(commercial) GRENZWACHT - border outpost
« on: August 11, 2022, 12:49:50 PM »
On my journey towards building a papercraft castle I wanted to start with something smaller and decided to go for buildings that could make an outpost.

The core "functions" of such an outpost would be watching the land, providing shelter for the soldiers and storage for weapons and food.

For the watching I will do the obvious ... a watchtower. For the rest I wanted a building that could perform all the functions in one. When sketching ideas I started with a regular house shape and added some "castle-like" crenel and merlon structures.

I built a simple model in Blender which I would use the get the unfold for parts, made a render and did a quick texture sketch over that.

Next I created a layout and organized all the needed parts. Once I got this done I started with a white test build to see how it would go together.

The tower will be for standalone use or combined with the core building.

Next step is to texture paint the parts!

Nice proportion on that building. Should look great all coloured in.
I think it would make a good Priory or rural Church too.

I have thought about a prison reskin but not about priory. Great idea!

I have started with the tower as it's the smaller project ...  :D

I have added these texturing/skin options for building different versions of a tower.

So basically a light and dark version plus some color tint options... also one can configure the door and window positions!

Here's what a final build can look like. First the tower only ...

... and then with the optional upper chamber and roof added!

Next I will work on the main building ...

I am back with some WIP pics of the next building I am working on right now. These are exterior builds but after these I will do an interior build too. For now I am focusing on getting all the parts and glue tabs right so the assembly is as effortless as possible  :D

The first pic shows the minimal configuration of the barracks/armory building.

With the next build I am adding the low and high extensions. I am slapping one of each on the front and back side but obviously you can have the same ... whatever you need :)

High extension ...

.. and low extension. I see this as the entrance side on my build. I also added a wooden roof-holding part as without it, the roof looked like it was floating in the air

Very happy how this stage turned out. Next will be an interior build with removable upper floor, so I will focus on some interior bits too like weapon racks and bunk beds to fill up the interior space and make it more interesting!

Entrance upgraded with some banner bits from my Patreon and papermini guards from PrintableHeroes 8)

That looks pretty impressive, especially with the guards and banners; they really make the piece come alive.

Interested to see how the interior will turn out!

This is really fun. I tend not to like papercraft because people get cartooney with it but this could easily fit into a lot of game tables, aesthetically.

Thanks ... and I agree with lots of cartooney papercraft styles. I try to walk the thin line of finding a middle ground with my art style. If it's too realistic (like photo textures) it will look fake for some weird reason, so I try to go for a mix of realistic with illustrative. That way I can go stronger on contrast or shadows when needed for good readability of details. I find it has to look "best" at gaming table distance and not zoomed in if that makes sense.

I am working on a couple of bits now to fill up the interior. It's only two floors so not so much space  :) My main "vision" is to have bunkbeds in the upper floor for the barracks part and weapon racks (and maybe a crate or two) for the lower armory floor. But with some of my tables and chairs one floor could be the "main hall" type of room!

Even though I do have a 3d printer to create terrain, your papercraft designs are still very much tempting.

I'll take that compliment, thank you  :)

Working on some stuff to fill the building. For the armory I want to have some weapon racks. Here are the first two versions.

I built a couple of my bunk beds for a nice promo shot (not yet in the barracks but my generic "tavern" stage set) for the release on my Patreon. So if you are interested join and go pick 'em up  :D

Here's the pic!

Now on to making more weapons racks and then start working on the interior of the barracks/armory!!!

Those are really cool - would be great for D&D and various other RPGs too... "You meet in a tavern..."
