40mm 3d figures
« on: January 27, 2025, 11:39:02 AM »
I thought it might be useful to some people for me to post about my experiences with some 40mm 3d printed figures. My previous experience was very hit and miss, some figures had odd proportions, the layers were really obvious and details were blurry. Scaling up to 40mm sometimes produces weird results.

So, this time, I bought some samples from Battle Honours 3D, a UK based company. The first ones were bought through Etsy, then others direct.

The first pack was of ACW Iron Brigade. The pack I received was with the supports still attached (I didn't take a photo, but imagine a real spiders web of stuff attached to everything). Clearing it all off was a bit of a pain to be fair. The bayonets on the figures were a little miscast but, as I was using them as samples that was fine with me. The detail is great, they paint up really nicely. I don't know whether they need it, but I washed them in soapy water first. I've included a couple of photos of the painted figures, done in a bit of a rush.

The second batch included some ACW Confederate Infantry - the bayonets are perfect on these so the first batch was probably an odd one. Detail is great - I bought these with the supports removed (costs a little extra, but worth it) so there was minimal cleaning up to do. I've included a photo of these in the raw.

I also bought a really nice Napoleon and staff officer pack. Bloody brilliant miniature of Napoleon, I'm going to really enjoy painting that one. There's a undercoated photo attached

I bought 2 packs of Napoleonic British Light Infantry, with a view to them filling a gap in my War Of 1812 collection. Again, great figures, nothing to complain about at all. Really easy and satisfying to paint. I'll be buying more of these. Once I've completed a group of them, I'll post some photos.

So, my conclusion, it looks like Battle Honour 3d has really upped the game (I don't know if they are the designers). Nice figures generally well printed, good detail, great service too. Good prices. I'll be buying more Napoleonic British, and I'm now left with a real dilemma. Do I lurch back into the ACW, I really like the figures, I've already produced a spending spreadsheet for it!!!!

This is not a sponsored review, just my own reflections.

The first base of the 85th foot completed. I like these figures a lot. Some things to bear in mind. I had superglued them to their temporary bases for painting. When I pinged them off, 2 of them broke at the ankle. I had overlooked that they are hard plastic. So lesson learned. The repairs aren't visible, so not an issue.

Interesting review Alan, they look interesting, especially Napoleon, looks a particular wonderful sculpt.  Have seen the Battle honours website, how do they fit with metal 40mm. Quite like the look of the Scots greys AND THE RHA rocket troops.

Hi Paul, they are a tad larger than most 40s, nearer to 42mm, so mixing in with other figures in the same unit wouldn't work. They are great figures, and so well priced. As with all 3d printed figures, the layers are visible in places but, for me, that's fine.

Thanks for the info Alan, just got back Murat and Capt Manhes (S&S), so will have to think about 3d printed, although Napoleon is very tempting. One of the appeals of 40mm to me is converting them, not sure about mixing with 3d prints.
