Show me your Sand Dunes
« on: August 18, 2022, 02:56:00 AM »
First I’ll show you mine (on 9x12” EPVC sheets):

https://www.flickr.com/photos/9593487@N07/albums/72177720301389199

They are about 2” tall, and I tried to maintain a 20 to 25 degree gradient to prevent figures from tipping over.  I used a hot wire cutter on the foam, and an expandable cutter with a brand new blade.  I used Woodland Scenics’ Foam Putty to fill in all the gaps.  The Foam Putty is very light, sandable and barely shrinks as it dries.  So no warping.

Next step is to paint on PVA glue and then sprinkle tile grout on all the top surfaces.  After sealing the grout with diluted PVA or Mod Podge I will go on to paint them.  Photos will be posted once I get to that step.  And I will add figures in the new pics, to help with scale.

Thoughts?  Ideas?  Suggestions?

Very nice.
I was lazy & purchased my sand dunes from Amera Mouldings (15mm range)

http://www.amera.co.uk/

They have the added advantage that (as I didn't base them) they are
stackable for storage.

That’s EPVC.  It cuts like butter with a hobby knife and does not warp because it does not absorb moisture.  That’s the reason I sand it and score it a bit before I glue anything to it.  I used MDF for basing before I discovered EPVC.  I first heard of it from Terrain Tutor:

Here’s one of the sources I’ve used in the past:

Waiting for the rain to stop so I can go outside and do the messy grout sprinkle.  It gets everywhere.  :)

Made these years ago for a commission, made of mdf bases with polystyrene dunes covered with filler and sand.

Looked better than I remembered  lol

Those look awesome.  But they are making me feel a bit hungry, for some reason.  :)

Very nice! I've never heard of EPVC, do you know where in the states can it be acquired?

Those do look good!

Hi

Here’s that link again:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/172216417658?var=473751257542

Also, I keep hearing on YouTube that printing shops throw out a lot of EPVC scraps.  I have yet to verify that.

Back in the day I made a few barchan dunes and documented the process for my blog:
