I'd like to pick a few brains here. As I've mentioned up thread I'm looking to create fairly high fidelity spaceship boarding actions. Outside of combat actions I see the main element being task checks and I've not yet found a set of rules that really covers these well, so I am working on my building my own.

A simple example being the hacking(opening) of a locked door within a spacecraft. While I can introduce all kinds of variables to the various types of doors my first question is
   - for a character with the required skill and basic equipment and two actions per player turn how long should it take to get the door open ?

Using some basic numbers I've jotted down for 2dr6 (2-4 fail, 5-8 no result, 9-12 pass)

20 rolls of a 2d6 saw two fails (this creates an event and door remains locked) five x pass (door opens) and 13x no result (door remains locked but allows further attempts when actions allow).
If a +1 modifier is applied seven of the no results would have become passes.

Seems ok to me, but I'd welcome thoughts. ?

Just for the sake of keeping the game moving I would be in favour of the +1 modifier. 13 vs 5 seems like a fairly large disparity unless the whole point is that the crew has to be lucky to open the doors. Even so, 12 vs 7 would be acceptable.

If they have two actions per turn you could give them a cumulative +1 each action they don't succeed. Symbolises slowing working through the defences of the lock or through the preparatory phases of another task - searching a data cube for instance.
If they score a fail, hit them with a -1 or -2 penalty. Doesn't mean they are totally stymied, just that they now know it is probably going to take longer.

Cheers Gents - they are both good calls.

Just for the sake of keeping the game moving I would be in favour of the +1 modifier. 13 vs 5 seems like a fairly large disparity unless the whole point is that the crew has to be lucky to open the doors. Even so, 12 vs 7 would be acceptable.

My intention with the modifiers is to have a maximum of +2 available
   one as a character trait/skill
the other as kit based. (have the hacker pad you get the +1)

This reduces the chances for a fail to 3% for a skilled hacker with the right kit. Still a possibility albeit very low. With no positive modifiers the fail chance is 17%.

I can the load differing types of doors with +/- modifiers as required. Security vault gets more negative modifiers than a locked cabin door.

If a fail occurs while there is no restriction on further attempts an "event" occurs. This being along the lines of all doors lock, an alarm goes off, a patrol moves to investigate the door etc.

I like this but will maybe add the +1 cumulative each turn rather than each action, as otherwise it gets too easy to quickly - I'll need to test.

The fail penalty is also a great idea.

More thoughts welcome

First two of the UNMC crew - tried to follow the concept art as best I could - think it works and they do look very different from Martian Light Armoured figures.

Those look great! The blue and black colour scheme works quite well.

Sexy! No mistaking this (blueberry/Smurf) for a Martian. Hard to believe the same figures were used.

I've always liked grey/blue armour (not even a Space Wolves player!) and you have done it beautifully.

Loving this project Pete.

Edit **never mind, I went back through the thread to enjoy your pics again and saw the book that you got which I shall now order!**

What concept art are you referring to?

Just catching up on these and the visors are absolutely superb! Now I'm wondering if I have a brush small enough to replicate that on a 6mm figure...
