Barbarus' Brutal Barbarians
« on: August 19, 2022, 07:26:50 PM »
A few years ago I realized the best method to get things done in this hobby is to go with the themes one's passionate about,
not building and painting minis for a specific game.

To those who play historical games that's certainly no new information.
You collect, build and paint minis that represent a faction that you find interesting from a time period you find interesting.

But yeah, it took me many years to get my head around that one.
Or that I could do the same thing people do with the historical games with my sci-fi and fantasy.

So I went looking: what are the things I am really passionate about?

Well, for one anything "barbarian". The barbarian archetype is always my favorite in any kind of setting.

Then there's paleontology, if it's extinct I'm interested.
It all started with the dinosaurs as a kid, but quickly evolved (huh-huh) into an interest specifically in the pleistocene.
You know, when our species and giant creatures inhabited landscapes at the very same time.
Mammoths, giant sloths, cave bears and sabre-toothed cats.
Awesome!

From there I moved forward and developed the idea of a "pleistocene themed army of barbarians", which would
mainly be used for Warhammer (6th edition) and maybe Kings of War, but really any game where those minis would fit.

The army is led by "Barbarus The Beastmaster", also known as "Barbarus The Bloodthirsty", "Barbarus The Banished" and "Barbarus The Brutal".
(some might also call him "Barbarus The Bada$$"  lol )
He's got a whole backstory of "shakespearean" dimensions full of betrayal, bloodshed and revenge.
And I will certainly write it down at some point.

Anyway, he really looks like a certified bada$$, riding on this giant hyena
(which I made from a collectible toy)

Superb conversion! I think there'd be a place for a fellow like that in just about any fantasy game under the sun!

Really nice, I'm also a big fan of the archetype. What is the base model for the rider?

Next post...

... the first regiment I finished for this army.

The unit has no name yet. Gotta think of something cool.

Up to this point they're simply called "Buff Dudes on Sabretooths" :D

And here they are raiding the neighbors:

He looks awesome! I’m looking forward to seeing it painted.

Your observations about focusing on a theme make sense to me. I make the most progress when I focus on an army, and I lose momentum when I split my attention. I don’t get as many models done in total, compared to when I work within a theme. My problem is that I have multiple gaming interests and companies like Northstar keep throwing new temptations in my way!

The head is from GW's Crom, the torso is from a barbarian by Avatars Of War, arm with axe is from GW's beastmen, the other arm is from GW's mounted marauders, his shield is some old GW shield... anything below his belly button is green stuff ^^

The hyena is a toy by... Papo, I think?

See? That's something one can avoid with sticking to themes. I have friends who "fall" for a new game basically every week.
It's no wonder they never finish a project...

If you like gorey horror stuff, just do gorey horror stuff and then find a ruleset for them...

Don't let yourself be tempted by the manufacturers :D
All they want is your money ^^

Here is one of my Chaos Spawns, "The Black Chimera":

The idea behind this one was that a maneating lion was transformed by the tribes' stories.
Their imagination shaped reality and the creature they talked about.
First they exaggerated its size.
Then they told stories of its black mane.
In the end they even added horns and a black snake as its tail.

Fantastic painting! Is that 'Black Chimera' based on an old Ral Partha chimera?

I have friends who "fall" for a new game basically every week.
It's no wonder they never finish a project...

If you like gorey horror stuff, just do gorey horror stuff and then find a ruleset for them...

Wise words! If you've got a big pool of painted miniatures, then trying out new games is pure fun rather than a chore.

(Of course, you always need more painted miniatures ...)  ;)

It used to be a chimera by Reaper.

I did not use the two outer heads, I sculpted some fur where they'd go.

Also added the horns. And that was basically it....

Aha, thanks - got it! I knew I'd seen it somewhere with another couple of heads. Terrific conversion and painting - and a lovely backstory.

Love Barbarus. He looks great. Makes those sabretooth guys look puny I imagine.
Have you checked out Deezee https://arcanesceneryandmodels.co.uk/product-category/deezee-miniatures/deezee-beasts/
Some great mammoths on there. I also used their Elasmotherium for mounting my Barbarian leader (old Grenadier barbarian)
