Rules Recommendation: Galley Skirmish Combat
« on: August 23, 2022, 12:56:18 AM »
Hello,

I am looking for a rule set recommendation.  I want to explore the naval conflict in the Mediterranean Sea during the 14h-16th century.  I want to recreate the piracy / privateer actions done by the Knights of Saint John against the Ottomans; and vice versa.

I am not looking to fight the large battles.  I want to focus on actions between a small group of galleys.  Hopefully with lots of boarding actions.

Thanks for any information.

There's always Naumachiae:

Should be detailed enough for smaller games, and it's free...

Anschluss produce "Galleys; Lepanto 1571" and there are several sets on Wargames Vault. Two are written by David Manley who is a well regarded rules writer on naval matters.

I started a similar project some years back never got it to completion .I was looking at pirate rules for ship movement and boarding, most of the ones i looked at are o.o.p. now. but I have been thinking of reviving the project using Osprey's En garde for boarding and making up or cutting and pasting the sailing rules

Perhaps take a look at Blood and Plunder: link. Although a little late for your period they are designed around pirate battles including ship-to-ship actions. They also have a 1/600 naval rule set called Oak and Iron: link. As with the above, set later than your period but should be easily adaptable.

I think you are after "Galleys, Guns & Glory!" by Thomas Foss at Skull & Crown. Although I have just realised now you probably want a couple of galleys full of figures, more than a skirmish game of galleys.

I was a play tester for the rules in the day and they are perfect for small battles or something the size of Lepanto.

He does a line of beautiful mdf galleys too.

Wizkids old pirates of the spanish main game had rules for galleys, so you could easily use that to bash toegther a nice easy ruleset :)

Going by the sub-divisions on the scale (side & top) I would say
that the grid is in half inches, i.e. about 12.5mm.

Galleys and Galleons from Ganesha might fit the bill
