You're right to play they way you want, and the way your group is playing, I was really simply curious. Take a look on 1st edition if you can find it, maybe you'll like it :)

Really cool to see the 40k and AT43 minis joining the fight!  Grimdark future is such a great flexible fastplaying ruleset I have no trouble believing it can handle all those factions with no problem.

Warzone 1st ed. was fun but more unbalanced than in later editions.
I always plan to deepen Kill Team (ed. 2021) and Stargrave which I found very fun and fast, but since I discovered OPR, I play easily with their rules: Grimdark Future and GF: Firefight.
Grimdark rules are flexible, fast and fun.
