Problems with AK interactive ultra matte varnish
« on: August 30, 2022, 12:07:37 PM »
Hi,

I occasionally use AK interactive Ultra Matte Varnish on spots of any f=given miniature that I might have missed with Winsor and Newton Pro Matt Spray. I have not had any problems up to this point.

I haven't used the varnish in weeks; but now when I drop some out on my palette instead of the thin white vanish I'm not getting a light brown colour. I have not had the guts to use this on any miniatures.

I have the whole thing a severe shake and I'm still getting the same brown colour.

Has anyone else had this sort of a problem? Do I have a bad batch?

Cheers.

I have not had the varnish come out with a brown tint but I did use it on my varnishing test figure that had previously been varnished with the Daler Rowney Soluble Acrylic Matte and it gave a patchy finish.

I am also not sure how to clean the brush I use as the usual washing up liquid/soap and water do not give me a clean brush.

I have no dared to apply the varnish on any miniatures as it was very obvious something was wrong. Originally the varnish came out as a nice transparent white and a few months later it's brown. Even after shaking like mad it came out the exact same brown.

I have a couple of bottles at least two years old, still fine. Perhaps the recent heat wave, or some sort of contamination since you opened the bottle. Acrylics can go off, hence the awful smell from water or wet palettes.

It wasn't contamination as one bottle remained unopened and I got the same result at the same time. It might have been the heat but I'm not so sure as I don't exactly live in one of the warmest parts of the UK  ???

Done. Got a £10 voucher with AK from AK. They have a minimum mail order tally so I ended up paying just under £20 for two more bottles.

I got a response from The Scale model Shop but no offer to replace the unfit for use items. Instead I was advised to get in touch with AK.

Overall I'm quite disappointed. It's the principle of the whole thing really.
