The British faced up confidently as they saw the Mahdists emerge from behind a short ridge ahead of them.
As the Mahdists advanced into full view the Gardner crew started to crank at their machine even while cracks issued from the line of the 42nd. But after only a very few shots the gun fell silent.
It was almost as if it was a signal to the enemy and the Fuzzy Wuzzies surged forward eating up yards on the sandy desert line starved men at a buffet.
The crew desperately tried to get the machine functioning again, but their attempts were in vain.
The Mahdists slammed into the line and in a flurry of blades the 42nd were soon slaughtered. The broken square fell back before the onslaught even as the Egyptians on the other side tried to bear up against the assault they faced.
Spurred on by the success of their comrades the big units of tribesmen on the flank rushed upon the retreating British.
The swarm of enemy quickly overwhelmed any resistance and the British were swept from the field.
With the British either dead or in full flight the Egyptians did not last long against a combined cavalry and infantry assault and the casualties would mount as political forces would try to explain the disaster at home.
