Looking for 15mm Rohan Horse Archers
« on: September 14, 2022, 03:47:16 AM »
Hello,

I am looking for suitable horse archers miniatures that would be good for Rohan.

The Bueda Frankish horse archers seem to fit.

Thanks for any ideas

Forged in Battle has several Dark Ages ranges which could fit quite well.   They've got  Anglo-Saxon and Arthurian/Romano-British lines, which are the real life inspiration for Rohan, though those do lack horse archers.   The Early Byzantine have some horse archers which fit the late Romano-British-ish style well enough that they could probably fit in with the other two lines.  Of particular note, the Arthurian line has a character pack which could easily be used for stand out special characters.

What does the fiction say about horse archers in the Rohan force.

Did they have them?

Hi Louie,

There are a couple of mentions of riders with bows. When they are first encountered by Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas 'A thicket of spears pointed towards the strangers: and some of the horsemen had bows in hand, and their arrows were already fitted to the string'. And when the Riders trap the Uruk Hai near Fangorn 'a few of the riders appeared to be bowmen, skilled at shooting from a running horse'. But when we finally see the Rohirrim charge at the Pelennor Fields the description appears to suggest a force of all heavy cavalry.

My take would be that the Riders of Rohan are heavy cavalry, but a few happen to have brought bows with them on campaign. From memory, there's also mention of mounted archers in Unfinished Tales (sorry, I don't have my copy to hand), but I had the impression that these were archers who happened to be on horseback to keep up with the glory boys rather than dedicated horse archers per se.

They did.  From the scene in The Two Towers where Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas first encounter the Rohirrim "Without a word or cry, suddenly, the Riders halted.  A thicket of spears was pointed towards the strangers; and some of the horsemen had bows in hand, and their arrows were already fitted to the string."

Edit:  Hob beat me to it...

Great minds think alike.  ;)

For a 15mm Rohan force with auxiliary mounted archer types it may be worth having a look at some of the Late Roman ranges. I thought these chaps from Fighting 15s might fit the bill.

The Early Byzantine heavy cavalry with bows from Khurasan make nice mounted archers in my opinion.

Not so much mounted archers, but I'd check out the Peter Pig mounted Vikings and their new Carolingians are lovely cavalry sculpts...

Amongst Essex 15mm Asiatic Hordes are some interesting possibilities, for archers how about these?

Thief, Reaver, Slayer.

I’m on a similar search and wish someone would compare the sizes of all these ranges. I’m looking for beefy types big enough to stand next to Wiglaf, Demonworld and Copplestone.

Have been eyeing with Lurkio.

As Rohirrim, I’d choose Goths and mix with stome ‚steppe‘ type archers:

Like these:
