7TV Fantasy question
« on: September 25, 2022, 02:52:17 PM »
I’m curious about the 7TV Fantasy game but am not keen on the idea of it being based around a TV series; how intrusive is that? Can you simply ignore it or does it constantly crop up? Thank you!

It is a skirmish game with its own system like many others and can be played as a campaign.  It tends to create a more cinematic game "story".  The TV part comes from the cards that are used to govern each turn.  They can be random events, bonuses and detrimental things that happen.  Those cards tend to be based on things that happened in 70s TV shows such as continuity issues with terrain moving, people tripping over and random explosions (in the regular game) as examples.  It allows you to create your own "cast" but most of the stock character cards are based on TV series and movies.  I find it to be a fun system for a game night that is not to be taken too seriously.  My suggestion would be to see if anyone else plays it locally and test it out before playing to see if it is for you.

From what I understand, Otherwold's largely unsupported skirmish rules are basically the 7TV rules without the 70's tv angle, Otherworld do their iwn set of cards.
Perhaps these might suit.

At it’s core it’s a small scale skirmish game, so while the cinematic terms are there to give flavour and tone, the don't interfere with the enjoyment of the core mechanics. If you’d like an independent view, then folk on the 7TV Productions Facebook fan page are a friendly and creative bunch.

There are also a number of how to play and independent review videos here:

Otherworld Fantasy Skirmish uses the first edition of 7TV. It’s a little different and uses a roster approach rather than the quicker pick up and play profiles cards in second edition of which 7TV Fantasy is part. There are 230 profiles in that box!

Hope that helps.
