Looking for 28mm Railway Engine, STL preferred
« on: October 07, 2022, 12:38:06 PM »
I've been looking for a cheap ww2 railway engine for 28mm for some time with no luck. All the various stl files ive come across are designed to sit on railway modellers chassis and gubbins... and O gauge running gear isn't cheap!  Any suggestions welcome...?

I use On30 which is 1/48th scale like O gauge, but narrow gauge on HO/OO tracks. If you can find a file that can be adapted to sit on a 1/87th scale chassis, it will probably do the trick.

I did that with a 1/45 scale plastic kit and a Hornby OO chassis:

Which nation?  They vary a lot - eg German, Soviet, French, UK?

Might be worth picking over the dead and dying non runners and old clockwork stuff on Ebay

At the end of this recent thread about a cheap 1/56'ish plymouth industrial locmotive...

... there's a link to a company making a bunch of different shells to go on top of affordable HO kits to make  O-scale narrow gauge locomotives.

Company B has trains with variable-width running gear (see here: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=134277.0), and I believe they're available as STLs as well as actual printed/cast items (they were all made originally as .stl files). I would message them if you don't see links to buy .stls on the site.

I picked up a S-Scale/American Flyer engine off Ebay a few months ago for fairly cheap, seems about the right scale to me.  I have an O-Scale layout and they're just too big  for 1/56 minis.

It didn't run but I didn't need it to.  It's a US design but looks kinda European and makes a good prop.  Also picked up a couple of flatcars and made a 3' length of track from some O-scale code 148 rail I had laying around.  Think I spent more on the 2 flatcars than I did the engine and tender.

It would be difficult to sell the .stl of the released models, as we are currently partnering with Pulp Figures on several sets of crews, engineer bundles, etc.  We also are selling the engines through other retailers that are not keen on it.

However, there are a number of engines that I half started and are not going to be released that could be offered as an .stl instead of having them sit on my laptop.  Could easily offer a generic engine model and a few cars.

Which era where you looking for?  or engine style?

Hi there,  looking for something generic 'European WW2' and small enough not to be a dominant feature on a 6x4 table.

If it should be historical and typical, I recommend a Prussian steam engine for goods trains. Those were sold all over the continent in thousands between the wars and found in western and eastern theatres alike. Those were also used to pull armoured trains - armoured themselves too of course.
0-10-0s were the most common, but 0-8-0s were also widely used.

Google for Prussian G10 or G8 locomotives. Those were called Reichsbahn Baureihe 57 and 55 in WW2 Germany, but differently by other european owners.

Thanks for that. Really helpful.
