HYW Coastal raids
« on: October 12, 2022, 09:15:46 AM »
Hello all

I was trying to find some reference to coastal raids during the HYW and the nobles that took part in it but without much success so i ask for some help.

I´m after both english and french raids and small actions as well as the names involved. So far i have found information about some of the chevauchés but that involves thousands of men so i´m after the smaller ones.

Any info and ideas are welcome. :)

Darrell, thank you for the tips on the books. :)

Books are always welcome but references of those raids (webpages stating that) would be good.

OK.... well, the raid on Southampton by the "French" is what arguably kicked off the HYW so:

A good old dredge through Google should offer some gems.

Look up my namesake John Hawley of Dartmouth, he might lead you to something interesting.

Quote from Wikipedia "Hawley was both a merchant and licensed privateer though he was often accused of piracy".

Although not part of the HYW between France and England, I've wanted to do a one man Crusade of Marshal Boucicaut on the coast of the Black Sea. I think it would be interesting and is in the same era lol

I’d recommend ‘Invasion’ by Duncan Cameron:

Don't know if it'll fit, might be a bit late, but didn't Warwick the kingmaker act like a bit of of a pirate when he was captain at Calais. I think one of the magazines had an article on it a few years ago.

On a similar note, Jeanne de Clisson has a pretty interesting career of piracy and coastal raids on villages in Brittany and Normandy in the Crécy period of the war if that helps at all!
