I had ZA from a while back, but got Kontraband this summer - not played it yet, but seeing your report is causing me to feel the tugging alure of yet another distraction from my current projects! 

One query I had was the viability of playing this at half-scale using 15mm figs... The tables you play on are quite dense, which may make it tricky to get one's hand. Would it work do you think, or too fiddly?

15mm... I've not tried it, but you're right; I do run my games with a lot of terrain. Shrinking everything down would make it tough for me to get my porky sausage fingers down in amongst 15mm cover and structures.
That said, if you're all set to play ZA/K in a smaller scale, then prepare for those nice, long lanes of fire by kitting out characters with smoke grenades.
