Attack the Baggage- War of the Ring
« on: October 16, 2022, 10:47:08 AM »
The forces of Evil are on route of march to attack the fortress of Five Roads, Held by the Men of Gondor. The Rohan have sent a force to intercept the column before this Happens.

Used "War of the Ring" rules from GW, a lesser-known set, untouched by GW "Dabble Trolls" has all the armies, special rules, etcin one book. My type of rules.

No points values, just a good old scrap to get various units on table to see how the rules play.
The Column has spotted their foe and prepares its battle formation.

Lurtz in command

The first Rohan Scouts are awaiting the rest of their units to form battle Formations

The mass shooting of the Rohan proved too much for the Haradrim Raiders

A Rohan Charge was too much for the Easterling Archers

The Column now looks vulnerable

Some reinforcements arrive for both sides

Mumakil and Harad foot head for the front of the column to protect it.

The Mumak charged and killed five Rohan in its stomp attack.

A Little different from Lord of the Ring Skirmish rules, very bloody, but a very workable, fun set of rules. Bigger set piece battle next time.

If it isn't enjoyable, it isn't gaming!

....... a lesser-known set, untouched by GW "Dabble Trolls"........

Sadly it needed "dabbling" with.  It was really, really badly written by one of GWs least capable writers and was in desperate need of an editor before being released.
Which is a shame as it could/should have been wonderful, true mass battles in the Tolkien world must be high on every fantasy gamers wish list.

There is a better version which (unlike most of the fan offerings) fixes the original rather than attempts to re-do it completely here:
http://jayswargamingmadness.blogspot.com/2022/06/war-of-ring-revised-rules-beta.html

That version is much easier to play than the original, even if it does leave in the Warhammer Fantasy type Magic system which IMHO should be scrapped.

Great heads up on these rules - see said website also contains rules for other periods as well as rules resources.

We were talking, after the game of simplifying parts of the rules that could be added/ subtracted from the profiles, and this has nailed it for me. Thanks for the link!  :-* :-* :-*

Wonderful to see a LoTR mass battle. I also liked the WoTR rules, warts and all. I never really played it with spell casters though and I heard they could be over the top. Jay's amendments really look to tidy the rules up.

The amendments are just enough to keep the flavour and will speed the game up, I am in no doubt.
