The death of the three 'kings'
« on: October 19, 2022, 06:53:33 PM »
It's been a year since our last Arthurian outing so we put together a game where Aelle ans his two sons Cisse & Cymen are besieging a town when along comes Ambrosius and all the troops he can find in Valentia to spoil the party.
Aelle deployed in 3 divisions all more or less the same; each commander had their own Gedriht, plus a unit of Duguth, a unit of Geoguth, a unit of Ceorls and sundry skirmishers; Aelle's division fielded a unit of allied Franks and ditched the Ceorls.
Ambrosius came with 4 divisions; one of Equites commanded by Riothamus leading his own Commanipulares, then 3 others under Ambrosius himself and Germanus and Gorongus each of a unit of Limitanei and a unit of Milites plus sundry skirmishers.

The early turns were pretty pedestrian, the skirmishers skipped forward (or in some cases couldn't get the nerve up to move at all  :-[) and the nice orderley lines soon broke  up as various units outpaced others.

Early action saw the Geoguth from Cisse and Cymen's divisions into action, Cisse against some Milites and Cymen against a unit of Equites; Cisse made short work of the Milites but Cymen's warriors ended up in a see saw fight that was finally decided by Aelle's  Geoguth charging in on the flank of the Equites and cutting them down to a man.

Following the defeat of the Milites from Germanus' division there followed a series of unfortunate events as the gods decided to p**s on Germanus from a great height and all his skirmish troops routed along with the Milites themselves (who started it all!) and briefly the Limitanei from both Germanus' and Ambrosius which rather encouraged the Saxons to go for it.
In a bloody encounter between the divisions of Germanus and Cisse the Limitanei got beaten up and pushed off but the clash between the Commanipulares of Germanus and the Gedriht of Cisse saw both commanders killed! Resulting tests for the bodyguards and the divisions saw Cisse's bodyguard enraged and spend the remainder of the game hacking at Germanus' bodyguard who were trying to bare the body of their commander from the field and ultimately died to a man over his body; Germanu's division began retreating from the field and Cisse's held their ground in mourning.

I would have posted MY pictures at this point, but NOT ONE of them loaded!!!!

I will simply say that it was a very impressive sight. There was much laughter
and banter, especially over the abysmal dice scores. The majority were by one
Romano-British commander (No names no pack drill) & started with a unit
panicking after winning a round of melee !!!! It ended however with two of
our brave Saxon commanders dying on the last move. For mine to die I had
to throw at least 13 with three average dice...I managed it. :'(
Us Saxons had managed to snatch, if not a defeat then certainly a draw, out of
a victory.

Back over with Cymen facing off to Riothamus, the Christian decided to go bold and charged home against Cymen and the Duguth unit he was attached to; despite a near death experience and casualties on both sides he managed to slay the Saxon general which resulted in the bodyguard baring the the generals body back to the boats and his contingent retreating. Riothamus let them go as his division was essentially finished.

Damm Pete I was looking forward to your evidence of our heroic fight  lol
Despite the official ruling of a draw Dave and I played on a couple more moves to see if Aelle could force a decision - he didn't  :-[
Despite a successful charge a rather inconclusive melee followed and Aelle was in danger of being surrounded so "after review" I think the Saxons probably lost  :'(

All told I think we had a pretty good game; the rules played well giving a fairly reasonable representation of warfare in the period (as best we know), everyone played in the right spirit and some laughs were had, can't ask for much more  :)
