Gunboat Diplomacy, 1905
« on: 17 October 2009, 05:28:26 PM »

Via Shorpy, which fishes old photos out of the US Library of Congress' web-archives and shows them off to the world, we see the American fleet visiting La Guaira, Venezeula in 1905.

View Original Size to see all of the detail. Lots of good stuff!

The whole Shorpy website is worth looking around, no matter what era you're interested in. The detail in some of the old photographs is amazing, and Shorpy's web versions are large enough to show most of that detail.

Don't think so, I can't see it either. Possibly the site Wirelizard stole it from prevents hotlinking to other sites. I can see the big version on the link though. Try that.

Ah yes, I wondered when you'd think of that.  ;)

Odd, the picture worked at first, but that might have just been my browser caching it or something odd.

Either of the blue links in my first post will take you to the photo, which really is cool - a very large hi-res scan of an old B&W photo of American navy cruisers off the harbour of La Guaira, Venezeula.

White hulls, guns in sponsons all over the place, all sorts of cool details visible on the docks in the foreground. Pity Shorpy's doesn't permit hotlinking.
