Warlord binning Doctor Who, unreleased figures offer
« on: October 21, 2022, 03:56:34 PM »
Hi all

Anybody else get the email?

Warlord announce they won't be renewing their Doctor Who licence after the end of this year, and try to sweeten the deal by making some unreleased figures a freebie if you spend upwards of 75 quid.

I don't know  how popular the range has been with LAFers, but some of the figures are pretty tidy.

Yes saw it.

I dont know who is prepared to pay £75 on an order just to get ONE of these "promotional packs" You'd have to be really keen. And rich!

There isn't a lot I haven't already got covered in 28mm, and that and the larger scale put me off going down this route.  I only got the plastic Daleks and Cybermen, and the metal specialist Daleks. Also I didn't want to have to keep forking out for a shiny box with 3 figures and cards surplus to my requirements.

There are some nice choices in these packs and one wonders why none of them have been issued in the normal way in the last couple of years. The old Black Tree ones are looking very dated now and I'd love to see some of these characters re- done by present day sculptors in 28mm

One might hope that with Warlord exiting this market, it might be possible for OTHERS to have a look...

I know that these licences must be expensive, but it really puts me off getting into any "New" non-Bolt Action Warlord games as you know that they are going to just bin them after a certain amount of time :-[

Not that it really appealed to me anyway as it was using a weird model size etc, etc.

Oh well back to the TARDIS :D

It was the size of the figures that put me off getting into Warlord's take on Who. Can't help but wonder if I'm not alone and Warlord should have gone with the flow and produce figures that would have fit in with people's 28mm collections.
Waiter, my soup is giggling.

Yes, the tall, skinny figures put me off as well, plus some of the poses seemed a bit off to me.

Still, I did pick up a few of the alien figs as I like the idea of them being larger and more imposing than the regular humans, and I got the Lady Doc because nobody else did one.

I can't say I'm feeling the urge to snap up any of the unreleased stuff as I think I have it covered in proper 28mm.

Yeah, Dr. Who travels through time and frequently visits Earth, yet incompatible size with all of their historical ranges — that was a non-starter for me and completely puzzling.

I have heard a rumor that BBC favoured the more realistic sculpts, another rumor said it was so you had to buy in with Warlords and couldn’t just cherry-pick and then buy the rest from other sellers.

Be that as it may, the release caused several aftermarket sellers to stop selling not-Doctor Who models, especially Heresy had a cool Rory, Master etc., and I was really put off by the scale as it hindered me combining the models with my collection.

Anyway, the final deal is a bit of a bad joke…if you really started to collect and want to have it complete…you‘re now forces to buy how much stuff to get the limited sets?

If I‘ll find the cybermen somewhere, I will get them. I have concerted a number of Daleks from the abysmal sculpts sold with the magazine and enjoy playing The Dalek invasion of the 40k universe with them ;)

Interesting in that they state they're not allowed to sell them. I guess these were sets that the beeb didn't like?

I suspect that this is down to them meeting a commitment with their license to provide these for sale and them trying to get a return on their investment for the masters and molds.

I'm not sure if my timing is good or bad ??? I bought an Algoryn(*) starter army at the start of the month to bulk up the few Algoryn figures I have in anticipation of Xenos Rampant. It was pretty close to £75, so I could have added a couple of things to take it over. This offer wasn't on them, but, looking through the figures, I'd be struggling to find a pack I wanted :?

Warlord has some vehicles that I quite fancy. However, their standard price now seems to be £35. Reaching £75 is, sadly, not difficult these days :(

(*) Battle of Antares is another line they're dropping (sort-of). Not quite sure what's going on at Warlord just now, but they do seem to be consolidating their ranges.

As a massive Dr Who fan I fully expected to be all over this range when it was announced - until I saw them!  :-[

As others have mentioned, they didn't fit anything else in my collection. So, ultimately, all I bought were the 13th Doctor and Tardis and the box of Cybermen with Missy.

I can't seen anyone else picking up the license and the related hassles of working with the Beeb anytime soon. Maybe the old 'unofficial' figures will reappear. Also, quite a few 'unofficial' are available via 3d printing sellers.

How strange and uncharacteristic of Warlord to introduce a new game/range/license and then drop it 4 or 5 years down the line. lol

Their track record for doing that is almost as good as GW's introducing a new/boxed game and then discontinuing it after a couple of years.

I quite like the UNIT squaddies but there is no way on earth I'm spending 75 quid just to obtain 5 fucking figures. As these are the least Dr Who specific sets I shouldn't be surprised if these get re-packaged and re-sold in the future.

Personally I don't buy the excuse. If the licence runs to the end of the year, then I suspect they could actually sell these, until the end of the year. Unless, of course, they have really fucked the pooch in their licensing agreement. More likely it's a naked grab for cash to recoup the tooling costs. Good luck with that.....

By the by, part from being thin, how do they scale out height wise? The Empress and Underfire ranges are really 32mm figures, so I was curious about the height of these.

I was putting off getting into this due to, as many others have said before, the scale. I was hoping they'd release Classic Daleks though and those Imperials are really nice, even if they all have the same pose.

Pity you have to spend 75 pounds to get them as that's almost twice what I give myself as monthly pocket money, maybe I should get that box of Daleks with Davros before they're gone?
