One of the things I noted about Plancenoit, when I took my two sons around the Waterloo battle fields in 2014, was that it most definitely was NOT the snooker table surface that you see in most wargame recreations. The church is on a mound and the ground slightly to the north and east with two farms on it, is - taken together with the church - quite commanding. However, the biggest surprise was that the lanes around the church (on the French sides) are often sunken, with many of the houses slightly raised up - one or two would probably have required scaling ladders to assault. And the centre of the village, in front of what is now a brasserie, is a bowl that looks deceptively shallow.....until you have to walk up the sides! It made me really appreciate the task facing the Prussians that afternoon.
