How would you use this for terrain?
« on: October 08, 2022, 05:50:14 AM »
Hello pals, I found this styrofoam piece and I thought they could serve as a good base to start some terrain. What do you think? what ideas do you get to make the best use of it?

it has so much potential, the center structure could be some sort of chapel, with an altar/sacrifice table, its pyramidish structure just add to it.

The borders could be forts walls...

It does depend on what you want to wargame it with.
Ancients, Modern, Sci-Fi etc & the scale 6mm, 15mm 28mm etc.

BUT
it has the makings of a fort or stronghold.
The central 'lump' would make a keep, mortar pit or fall back position.

I personally like the repaired old/damaged look, so would break off
some bits (that section of wall fell down/ was undermined when the
Fort was captured/ etc.) Then 'repair them' Wooden barricade, more modern
bricks, scrap sections from a damaged space-ship etc.

Coat the whole thing with Modge-Podge/ PVA glue/ Flexible Ceiling paint/
Papier-Mache or whatever you have to protect it.
Paint it with Matchpots. Drybrush with same.
Detail...whatever you like. Chains for the drawbridge, cracks or Laser blasts
 in the wall, Graffitti even.

Flock over the worst bits  then play a game with it. :D

What scale do you intend to use it with, and how much work are you willing to put into it as a project?

I like old school conan and hyborianesq fantasy, so the first thought that pops into my head would be a kind of slavers caravanserai (google the term if you aren't familiar, and you'll see why the idea popped into my head) for 25/28mm, as all those cut outs along the side walls look like they could be holding cells. Maybe put some popsicle sticks or coffer stirrers down as plank boarding over the tops, and then make some cell bars from tooth pics or wire. The central mound becomes the keep itself. You could also essentialy do the same idea but with some kind of temple/pyramid as you mentioned dedicated to an evil cult.

However, no matter what there is going to need to be some in regards tot he central area. It's a great base for a lot of things, but doesn't really 'go all the way'.

Personally, I would also carve out a gate way (hot wire cutter recommended!) from the south wall in your pic, that is the wall closest to the writing. That wall seems to be the least useful for anything architectural, and has the most stuff you'll probably need to fill in anyway.

Decorate to fit your chosen setting:

Evil mastermind's base with central shrine, temple, sacrificial chamber, laboratory, weather changing ray,.
As above with secret weapons in corner circles or missiles in silos
A base deep below the volcanic/desert/secret island, Antarctica
A fantasy dungeon or mine for goblins, demons, dwarves, troglodytes, dragon etc
Necromancer's castle. Cult Temple where unspeakable rituals and sacrifices take place
Ruined fortress where any Fantasy, mythology, historical, pulp, post apocalypse, scifi adventures meet their mission objective
Alien base on whatever planet, asteroid satellite takes your fancy
Damaged containment centre that is crawling with escaped inmates and needs to re-sealed
The lost tomb of ... Temple of ... laboratory of ... Palace of ...

You are only limited by your imagination!

Thanks pals, I'm planning to use it in fantasy setting, you have given me some nice ideas. I was wondering also how to protect it from can painting and make textures, and I guess that papa mache and glue could work for that.

Paper machie and glue is too much work.  Give it a thick coat of house paint and then a second coat with some texture mixed in and then dry brush to taste.

Looks like a throne room for an evil lord.

I often coat my polystyrene with a mixture of a silicone wall filler asnd PVA glue.  If you want a rough surface, add sand or mulched paper.

But I also came across this
