15th c. Spanish Banners
« on: November 23, 2022, 09:30:52 AM »
 Hello all,

I recently have begun my journey into wargaming and miniatures and decided to start by picking up some perry boxes for hyw and wotr. I have, however, had an especially hard time finding resources (particularly flags, liveries, armor, and troop compositions) for the mid to late 15th century period. Yes, I did see that someone posted a resource for just this already on the forums, but the book is about $20-$30. That's as much as another box of miniature.

I'll cut to the chase: Does anyone have any 15th century Spanish (or Italian, for that matter) banners they could share with me? In turn, I could share some that I've already made (or heraldic services, if you'd like). I've made the royal standard of the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon's personal banner of arms, and a banner for Valladolid.

Additionally, what livery should I use? Considering I'm primarily representing Castile and Leon, I figured I should make some soldiers wearing red and white to represent the quarters of the coat of arms. Would it be wiser to use red and yellow?

Edit: I'd like to add that any Spanish, not just Castilian banners, would be amazing

Did you use Spanish for your search ? Using Google Translate I asked for "15th century Spanish banners" which resulted in "Estandartes espaņoles del siglo 15". Using that for searching resulted in more than two billion (!) hits. Here is just one of them: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estandarte_del_rey_de_Espa%C3%B1a
(although I assume you already have this kind of information). Perhaps however it is worth a try.

Generally I do use (if possible) the original language for searching, often with succes ! Happy hunting !

I did find that specific page, but haven't tried searching in the original language yet. I'll definitely give it a go now, though. Thanks!

Last year (or maybe the year before or so...) Arquebusier, the Journal of the Pike & Shot society, ran a series of articles about the Lat med/Early Ren Spanish army, done in WRG Armies and Enemies... style. Seemed pretty comprehensive. Not sure if these things are available pdf, but might be worthwhile dropping them a line.

If you want to pay for banners, these are excellent

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264709671973

I have used Pete's Flags (the seller) for most of my 15mm C16th and some may do for late C15th too. They have lots of options in both 15mm and 28mm so worth a root around on the ebay shop.

Thank you. I actually wanted to throw in a couple of Italian banners, so this will be awesome.

Thank you. I may or may not use my skills as a heraldist to recreate these banners >_>
