임진왜란 - Japanese Invasions of Korea (1592–1598)
« on: November 24, 2022, 10:56:35 AM »
Hello fellow adventurers,
I've recently visited Korea and was bitten by a local Hobby Bug (Aedes Hobbycanus) when I saw this at a museum:

Using finely tuned ocular-pollical calculations I decided this house could fit with 28mm miniatures:

Not looking very closely at it, I assumed this would mostly be MDF and put it in my luggage. Imagine my surprise when I later saw the walls were just printed paper. So naturally I had to upgrade it a little:

(Thank you, Starbucks coffee stirrers!)

After applying some paint, I realized I also didn't like the look of the roof. So after some deliberation with an expert friend of mine I decided on a different approach, which had the house look like this for a minute:

And soon after like this:

Which is basically where I called it. (Gave the stones on the edge a bit of a wash so they wouldn't be that grey, but I doubt anybody needs a picture of that.)
What you're seeing is a 초가집 (Choga house) a type of traditional thatched house common in the south of Korea during the time of the invasions.

(This is what I was going for btw:)

I have another building I'm currently working on, which is a 기와집 (Giwa house) a tile-roofed house:

More of that later. The general idea here is to have some terrain and a few Koreans and Japanese miniature men to play with. Towards this I've pledged to the Zenit Kickstarter for Joseon that ran recently, and I'm probably gonna pick up some Ashigaru and a Samurai at the LGS soon.
What I haven't done is deciding on a ruleset to use. I'm looking to have very small games, of mostly guerilla actions (maybe set in a campaign). Do you guys have any suggestions what might fit the bill?

Well, i'd say you're off to a good start there! The reet roof look reet propa. Seems like you got the result you aimed for.

As for rules, I like Ronin by Osprey of course, because it's got all the things (including a Korean army list) and it's rather cheap. I think that Sidney Roundwood has been working on some excellent not-RPG wargame with colourful characters and such. Migth be called Banzai Bonkers? Not sure. It's interesting that Ganesha Games don't seem to have a far eastern game that I'm aware of. But Song of Blades and Heroes will always work, I think.

Looking forward to progress on the buildings!

This is looking very nice. the solutions you applied are also very convincing.
the next building looks a little bit more daunting but with some patience you'll nail that too.

I hope you can soon show it with some miniatures next to it. some atmospheric lights and a cool backdrop maybe?

 ;)

There's a 'SoBaH Engine' set called Bushi No Yume, available free from:

Oh, I'd heard of Bushi No Yume, I didn't know it was based on SoBH. Excellent to know and thanks for the link! I guess there's no excuse any more for not trying those rules, eh? :)

There is now Clash of Katanas, too:

Have you found an online retailer for those kits, perhaps on gmarket? I have seen a few of them on ebei, but I think that they were at a smaller scale.

The manufacturer may not sell retail; I am still looking for some way to make an order:

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Regarding rules suggestions, I'm reading Bushi no Yume atm, and it seems to fit what I want rather well.
But I'll also make sure to look into Clash of Katanas.

Sadly I haven't been able to find those model kits outside of Korea yet. At least not in an 28mm appropriate scale. The website you linked is their catalogue, the actual shop is here: http://www.youngmodeler.co.kr/
The 교육용시리즈 (Education Series) is what you're looking for; but they seem to not have the houses at this time.  :-X

This is the current state of my second house:

Unlike the first house I built this in a way where I can remove the roof, which means I have to paint the inside as well. :?

That second kit looks good.

I found their webstore (in translation), and a Q&A section (also in translation):

https://www.youngmodeler.co.kr/board/board.html?code=youngmd_board3

If they do not export from Korea, might there be some way for forum members to order through you, with some commission for your trouble?

I got in touch with them through instagram (my email message must have gone to their junk folder), and they have replied to the effect that orders can be submitted by email, listing intended purchases. They will then reply with postal costs and so on, presumably as an invoice. And yes, they do export. They also have an English language website, which they brought to my attention:

Well that seems pretty straight forward. I went through their webstore and found the roughly scale appropriate buildings they do have in stock:
One,
two
and three
The top two are the ones I have.
Finally there is a water mill, but they show the wrong product in the description and generally I would say it looks a lot less convincing then the others.
Anyway, for now I have enough of their stuff. Plus the thatched roofed one looked easy enough to build on your own, so if I wanted to have another house I'd probably try that first.
