Don't call Arichilles a μαλάκας!
« on: September 06, 2022, 11:16:40 AM »
Which is exactly wot Divtroclus, an Athenian Hero, has done!
A very insulted and upset Arichilles mentioned it in passing to his elite Spartan Guard, which set them off too! Gathering a bunch of allied underlings the Spartan King sallied forth to make Divtroclus eat his words. As the two sides close, a finely mounted Divtroclus, taunts his old enemy.
Arichilles turns a contemptuous back on the Athenians, and after combing his hair, leads his elite Spartan Guard in a spirited rendering of...

"We only sing when we're winning!"

Any ideas/suggestions for a simple mechanic for the two Generals to have at it?
No rocket science here chaps, but the sacred application of the KISS Principle, would be greatly appreciated!

Nice set up.  It took a while to get my schoolboy Ancient Greek back into my mind though!  So I can (now) see why Arichilles was upset!  Mind you insulting his very long hair and calling him a αδελφούλα might have started a war - Oh it did!

Anyway as far as single combat is concerned I would use ideas from generic fantasy/gladiator/duelling (3 Musketeers?) rules and create two similar but slightly different profiles.  But with Arichilles only vulnerable point being the top of his head where his mum, Arithritis, held on when she pushed him under in the River Twigz is it not a bit one sided?

Look to the Ronin/En Garde rules single combat!

I think having Divtroclus calling Arichilles ''malaka'' and then Arichilles coming back with something about the private parts of Divtroclus' mother or sister, would be sufficient  :D lol ;D
Im still laughing with the title of the thread  lol lol lol

Thank you my dear Captain, most appreciated. To proceed...

Both sides close rapidly, the Spartans' allies keen to impress King Arichilles, sprint ahead. The cavalry charging headlong into the serried ranks of Athenians, the archers sprinting to get a firing position...
disaster strikes within seconds, Athenian Hoplites counter charge. The archers are massacred, the cavalry thrown into routed confusion! A wavering Spartan right flank is saved by a measured advance of the allied Phalanx. Which in turn forces an enemy unit to break and run. This small victory is soon forgotten, the rout of the archers has left the Spartan elites dangerously exposed. The Athenian unit, elated at the butchery inflicted upon the hapless archers, takes the Spartans in the flank. Another Athenian unit smashes into the head of the Spartan line! King Arichilles' perfectly honed strategical genius, senses the crisis of the struggle is upon him. The Spartan King shoulders his way through the struggling masses, he's spotted a smug looking Divtroclus, urging his Athenians on. Arichilles knows if he personally slays the Athenian General the day can still be his!

:o

The King's roar of...

"Ground spears!"

Has both Spartan and Athenian snapping to attention, and taking a backward step. Divtroclus sees his chance and spurs his warhorse directly at the Spartan King. Valiant as his attack is made, Divtroclus is not fighting an ordinary man, he is fight Arichilles a King of Sparta! Arichilles, darts to one side and drives his spear deep into Divtroclus horse's chest. The animal collapses and Divtroclus is thrown into the dust. Athenians gasp as the King steps in, and plunges his already bloodied spear, through their General's eye socket and then his throat. Divtroclus dies in a welter of blood and gore...

The Spartan King's Honour has been restored!

"Enough men have died already today!" The King shouts. "Go back to your loved ones Athenians, my quarrel is not with you today."

Arichilles' noble words bring harmony where mere minutes before, great discord had abounded. Both sides withdraw and the fight is over.
