Tyrol 1809 Christmas game
« on: December 23, 2022, 09:46:42 PM »
We finished a fine year at OWS in fine style with another classic multi-player Christmas game from Mark Smith's talented pen – 10 players, all with individually crafted objectives! This was set in the Tyrol in 1809, with Tyrolese Schutzen, Landsturm and irregulars, plus some Austrian regulars, taking on the Bavarians defending Innsbruck. AAR with a few photos here:

Hi Chris!

Great to have a blether the other day.

Now that is different! Austria 1809 but not the usual fare. Great use of proxies in another tribute to the utility of 6 mm.

Has fired my own creative juices for our own Manchurian Candidate for BBB……might get a game of same in next week and post some pics…….

All the best,

Scott

Indeed, the utility of 6mm plus the versatility of BBB ... Manchuria will be fun too.

Chris

PS Why Flodden? (Not a battle that I see as being at all interesting to refight, but five of my clan fell there ...)

Hi Chris,

Horrible weather here today, snow, heavy rain, wind, the works. So a day of RJW gaming might well occur. Luckily the dog got an extra big walk yesterday as today may be a rather different one for him….

As for Flodden1513, I suspected there may be Border ancestry in your name. Very impressed to see that your genealogical research has thrown up the connection. Guessing from your surname and the number of your losses that they were lost fighting for James?

I have no idea if I have a family link to the battle. My surname is of course Scots and some genealogy suggests an ancestral link to Fife or Perth. So chances are , if any of my lot did fight, they were with the Ward of the Earl of Montrose. And at the back of the ranks , as as my ancestors were almost certainly pretty poor. For once, a saving grace!  We have holidayed near Flodden many times as well as in the wider Borders. One of the few contemporary tombs to a slain Scots Lord (Sempill) , where his body was brought back,  is within a dog walk of my house! Hence my online moniker . Big interest, local connection and possible family connection.

But linked to or not , I have always found this period interesting as part of the broader 16 th century shaping of early modern Europe. And yes, got the armies in 10 mm as well as the Tudor forces to fight in France and their continental allies and opponents. Also 28 mm skirmish forces for the general reiving period.

Will continue the chat no doubt and send some RJW pics! And perhaps one of a Flodden game. So far the Scots have usually reversed history!

Scott
