3rd Afghan War 1919 - BEF 20 Squadron aircraft colors?
« on: December 30, 2022, 03:20:24 PM »
Good day and happy holidays.

I’m interested in how the planes of the BEF 20 Squadron serving in Afghanistan during the 3rd Afghan War in 1919 were painted. I’m trying to model a plane from this squadron and was hoping the vast knowledge of this amazing group would produce some leads. The BE2C aircraft concerned was BF4626, the recorded pilot was A/Capt G. Eastwood and his observer was 2 Lt DM Lapraik.

Here is a possible pic of an aircraft in this Squadron.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Cheers, JB

I think that picture is a later BE2e (different wing support struts and larger wing). It also seems to have a non standard auxiliary fuel tank fitted above the cockpits and lacks the underwing bomb racks.

As standard the tail rudder on British aircraft was painted with RAF Blue/White/Red vertical stripes. In the picture the fuselage colour is probably the RAF Drab PC10 brown (or green depending on manufacturer) as the overall colour is darker than the somewhat faded blue stripe.

The top one from this Windsock Data book on the BE2e has the same serial range as your image:

Amongst WW1 aircraft modellers the "Was PC10 Drab actually Green or Brown"? discussion is perpetual.
