A Spanish Project
« on: January 02, 2023, 11:56:41 AM »

I’ve had a load of medieval Spanish stuff lying about for years now.  I thought I’d do something with it this year.  First though I added some new figures from Donnington.  Now I have made a start.  There’s a rough project outline on my blog and some more pics.

If it is of interest here is a link.

OB, nice looking project. I recently acquired a Caballero Miniatures 28mm 11th century Spanish Christian army. Lovely figures. One of my "to do" projects for this year.

Thanks SJwi.  Those Caballero figures look great.  Are they as good in the flesh as it were?

OB, it might seem a strange answer but "I think so". To be honest I haven't checked them in detail except to ensure they are all there. They are very finely detailed, and the slightly shiny resin material makes is quite difficult to pick it all up. I will know more when I wash and then undercoat them! However they certainly look the part at 1st glance. They are 28mm but a slimmer style than many metal manufacturers.  I bought mine at 2 shows from Fenland Miniatures . I have seen another stockist Iron Gate Scenery selling them, but  at almost double the price. For instance "Villagers A" costs £7.50 from Fenland and £15 from Iron Gate. I have no idea why? I thought Fenland needed the supports cutting off but when I have bought from them they come ready to hit the painting table. The range is now quite extensive with lots of characters and scenic bits and pieces.

Thanks, it's all interesting stuff.  The price differential is a bit of a shock. I'm sure it will develop further even unto 15mm.

OB, yes I can't understand the differential. Looking at other manufacturers ( eg Blitzkrieg Miniatures Ancient Indians) £1.50 for an infantryman seems to be the going rate ie the price from Fenland. That said I don't know how much the licence from Caballero Miniatures /Reconquer Designs costs . Also, it now seems that 3D printed figures cost almost the the same  as metals,.. That certainly wasn't the case when I first saw them on sale in 2020. Then I think they cost about 80p each ie about 60% of a metal one ( at 2019 prices).

Thanks Golgotha.  I should have a few more units soon.  Currently I'm working on a Berber Billhooks Army list.

I’m making a bit more Berber progress and thinking about how they fought.

An interesting project, although very very broad. It is easy to mix armies from different periods in the stage that in Spain is called "La Reconquista", since it spans several centuries.

The armies of the "mythical past of Don Pelayo" have nothing to do with those of the time of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, "el Cid, or those of the Catholic Monarchs.

I hope you enjoy the creation process a lot and have fun with it. Much encouragement and I will follow it with interest.

By the way, the flag that you have assigned to the Muslims is the one used by the independent Riffs, who want to separate from Morocco. I'm telling you as a curiosity, since with my Rif War project, I came across that flag and I had to see if I could use it with my Rif people, hahaha.
