Uniform guides for the Anglo Sikh Wars?
« on: January 08, 2023, 07:34:37 PM »
Help, please. I'm looking for good solid uniform guides for the Anglo Sikh Wars (particularly the First).

I'm okay for histories for the moment, and I know about the Osprey 'The Sikh Army' and 'Armies of the East India Company' books (don't have them yet) but, what else is actually out there specific to Anglo Sikh Wars. I'm struggling on this one.

Thanks.

P.S. I'm looking at possibly doing a middling sized collection, in 28mm, as my 'colonial' period: Perhaps 1200 figures all in. This would be instead of option 1, 'The Sudan'.

The John French "British in India" book published by Foundry doesn't have any colour plates but it has very good descriptions of all the main uniforms and their colours.

I used it as one of the main references for my 15mm Black Hat Sikh Wars range.

I'm guessing you already have seen this.  The black/dark grey trousers should be blue I think.

Thanks, BHM. I was aware of this book but, it's more than pricey for what it is (cheapest found is £60). Very much a 'nice to have' book but, not at that price.

Hadn't realised it was that price - I bought it for £10 when it came out!

Mike, all those cloth-bound Foundry books now go for "silly money".

Back to the topic in question. Osprey produce a volume on the 1st Sikh War in their Campaign Series. Not exactly a uniform guide but might be worth checking out.

Other than descriptive text the Perry guide posted by OB is what you need.

The Ospreys on the Sikhs (MAA & Campaign)which you've mentioned are good and the British Army on Campaign 1 (maa 193) is useful for the British.

Donald Featherstone did "At them with the Bayonet" and Helion have published a few books or are about to about the Sikh Army/Sikh war.

The Foundry book on India is a good one, if you spot it and can afford it I suggest buying it but it's not essential. Stick with those three Osprey and you're covered for uniforms.

The Foundry one is available as a Kindle edition or Epub for about £18.

I originally bought most of them because if you bought a £10 book you got free postage on an order and therefore it only cost you £2 for the book!
