Photo Review of Wargames Atlantic's Ooh-Rah 28mm Space Marines
« on: January 19, 2023, 11:56:00 PM »

Just had a chance to review these near-future Space Marines (think Aliens not 40K) they are some of the finest minis that I have had the pleasure of seeing in forty years of wargaming. If you are into near-future or Sci-Fi gaming you should certainly consider adding these delightful minis to your collection. Thanks for the review! The figures look pretty darn good. The only thing the set is missing is some sort of weapon that could pose a credible threat to a vehicle (probably could have traded out one of the 2 MG weapons for an AT rocket or similar). Still, that would probably be fairly straight forward to do with some conversion (and who knows, maybe the plasma MG has an anti-tank setting?).

Thanks for the review.  I had already decided I was going to pick up a set of these fellows, sooner or later.  Now it looks like "sooner" it is going to be!

I have a batch of Clix Alien warriors (and a queen I believe) hidden away, that I bought at the LAF Bazaar years ago, which still require a juicy opposing force to glue to the walls.

I've always had a soft spot for the Leading Edge minis, ever since I first spotted them back in the late eighties / early nineties; they were the first non-GW miniatures I ever saw and I always wanted some.

So recently, I tried to source one of those little cases the sets came in, and I noticed a couple of things: they are now hideously expensive, nostalgia aside, the minis are not really up to snuff anymore and they're also tiny, being heroically proportioned 25mm. So as much I am a sucker for the OOP and the nostalgic, sadly, they just don't really do it for me.

But these plastics would be excellent Colonial Marines to send on another bug hunt! 8)

One thing I'm curious at; with GW's IG Astra Militarum having creaped the scale again recently, and WA seemingly following suit with their ranges; how do these bois scale next to 'standard' 28mm heroic miniatures?
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Daeothar,  They are bigger than pure 28mm (in comparison to WA's WW2 offerings) but not excessively so. They aren't as thick as GW products seem to be

Thanks, a useful review, with lots of detailed photos. I do agree that a different second heavy weapon would have been good, probably better than a 2nd LMG, as I doubt people will want/need 1 in 3 troopers with an LMG. Perhaps the Perry sets spoil us, but a command sprue would have been great.

Do you have any of the Stargrave plastics to compare against?

Lovely-looking kit, and I agree on the AT weapon over the second MG on the sprue - you get three sprues in the box, so that's already at least three of every weapon! Also, a GL on the sprue would have been welcome too.

I think if you put Wargames Atlantic Cannon Fodder rifles on these, and painted them up suitably, you'd basically end up with non-GW 2nd Edition Cadians...?  :)

I'm really looking forward to them.

Can't wait to see what WA do next as well.

WA seem very good at producing sets of bulk generic cannon fodder and these would be great for Aliens or even Doctor Who...modern Who tends to feature future troops in the gritty camouflaged mode rather than fashion disasters, so lots of uses for them.

Great Review. I have Wargames Atlantic's Lizardmen, Einherjar and Dark Ages Irish - all great kits. I shall definitely have to check these out in future.
