Roman skirmish rules?
« on: January 20, 2023, 03:58:47 PM »
Hello there everyone.

I'm looking for some rules for a skirmish I'm planning on putting on for Falkirk later this year.

Would be fairly small no more than twelve Romans guarding a supply convoy vs perhaps thirty pics.

Any suggestions?

If I were running a Roman skirmish, I would be tempted to use Mordheim as the ruleset, but use Warhammer Ancient Battles for the character profiles. It has plenty of Roman profiles in the core book, without needing any additional supplements.

But, if you're looking for something a bit more dynamic, with less of a structured turn order, Song of Blades and Heroes is a good bet for a skirmish game in any setting. I have used it for Romans in the past.

Song of Dust and Shadows is skirmish in Roman urban settlements. Might be a good point to start!

I assume you want Imperial Romans?

Broken Legions has some rules for this period that maybe of value.

The song of series of rules mentioned above would be excellent.
Very easy rules to learn and explain. Perfect for a convention game.

Could stat them up useing the Lord of the rings rules.

Speaking of which, the Warhammer Historical ruleset Gladiator (sadly out of print for many years), is based on the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, but it actually has profiles for Roman legionaries in it.

Another suggestion I always recommend is Ravenfeast, a free ruleset designed for Viking skirmishes, but easily adaptable to other historical settings. It would work perfectly well for Romans.

Don't suppose someone has already done a staus? i know one of the wargaming magazines had done status for the punic wars.

Yup, Fistful of Lead will work perfect.  The Might/Melee rules work great for Trojan War Skirmish, and we've used the generic ones for Peloponnesian War Greece.

I agree that Fistful of Lead would work very well for a skirmish game with that number of models.

Another vote for Fistful of Lead from me.  Very flexible ruleset.

Especially in a convention setting, it's nearly impossible to beat Fistful.  The activation system alone is perfect, and it's a fast and fun system to boot.

If you are willing to imagine different actions on the gaming table before the direct fighting, as Roman scouts with hidden moves walking ahead of the column, or local civilians with different intentions or having informations about enemy moves, or Picts in disguise coming near the convoy at first etc. and act as a RPG game master, that's what Argad rules are for. :D
If not, in a direct fight the game would end too fast with these rules so you need some other system as others have suggested.
