Heraldic Images in 15 mm: ideas, please
« on: March 08, 2024, 05:24:43 PM »
I wish to paint at least 24 knights in 15 mm, both a mounted and a foot version, with likely two dominating elements, the overall color, especially of the caparison on the horse, and the shield itself which is likely the most identifiable element.  The 24 knights will be divided into 8 teams of 3 so some commonality for each team would be ideal.   There will be a mounted and foot version for all 24 knights.

Also, I have a couple of sets of additional figures, probably a couple of royals, and Special Set of Three Special Knights - who will have somewhat of a different role, probably tournament winners can challenge one of these superb champion knights to enhance their reputation - if they win (or survive!); these 3 also have mounted and foot versions.

My skills won't reach as far as detailed images so more simple than complex is better - though a bit of imagery is not out of the question.  I've already Googled Medieval Heraldry which gives plenty of ideas.  Just hoping for thoughts, especially from those who have done something similar in 15 mm.

Thanks for your input.

Personally, I'd paint the shields the same or similar colours for each team and use decals for the heraldry.
There are 100 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data.

So, while investigating locations we will be visiting on our pending visit to UK, I noticed all the towns so far have a 'coat of arms'  and some of the designs are fairly simple, via Wikipedia.  I just might do the teams to match the towns we visit, whether overnight or just a pass through.  At least the shields and then base the colors on the shield.  Seems workable and a nice, long-term reminder of the journey that starts in a couple of fortnights forward or so.

Here is a for instance, Chester:

Maybe not all towns will have something useful but hopefully enough of them.

I really enjoy painting heraldry in 15mm.

But I'm also extremely near-sighted...

You could make each team of 3 a family group with the same coat of arms, and two of them with marks of cadency.  The eldest would have the plain coat of arms, the second would have a 'label of 3 points' on top of it (like the Black Prince and some others in my photos below), and the 3rd would have a crescent on top of it.

Cat, thanks so very much for your response.  I am very much a novice in the world of medieval heraldry and you have given credence - and proper usage based on looking up cadency - to a thought I'd already considered for differentiation, though I was thinking more like one, two, and three dots across the top.  Now I can be more historical in my approach.

Thinking about it, for variety's sake you could use an assortment of the cadency marks — each family doesn't necessarily have to bring the heir and the spare, other junior members could be mixed in to use the other marks.

I love painting heraldry in 28mm, but you cant get much done freehand in 15mm. If you dont want to use decals, then mostly use lines+arrows, and quartering+halving of colours.

Atheling, nice work but aren't those 28 mm figures - or at least 25 mm?  I looked at the blog post and the closest reference was a statement about Foundry figures and then basing sizes.

Well, my bit of contribution. Figures by Blue Moon.
Flags are either Flags of War or taken from the internet and printed to scale.

They are indeed. That's what I get for not reading the title of the post properly!  o_o

Atheling, no worries, still useful.

rumacara, that is all very nice and going right down the path I'm looking forward to - and I think my skills might be able to handle most of what you show.  I once did the ACW era Wisconsin state flag by hand in 15 mm to a reasonable degree but my eyes and hands were both a few decades younger at the time!
