BSC2023 David H East European Church - having to drop out
« on: January 29, 2023, 08:37:42 PM »
My first participation in this contest, but I have been intending to build a church for Eastern European games of Chain of Command, and there are some quite quirky shaped  churches from that region I fancy building.
I have a couple in mind already, just need to draw up some plans.

I might just change this for a Spanish/Portuguese church for use in Black Powder Peninsula games, but I think that will be a bigger build than I have time for in this contest.

These are the type of churches I am thinking of, the blue one would be unusual, but I need to find some 'onion' top domes, and the wooden one has some interesting shapes to it, I'll need to remember my schoolboy geometry!
I think I'll be using 2mm plastic card for the build, perhaps some balsa too.

Yay; polystyrene for the win!

This time round I won't be able to use my favourite material, so you're going to have to make up for that now  :D

Great subject; very interested to see how this one turns out.

No pressure then? I hope I live up to your high standards!!  8)

I think I have made my decision - my build will be based on the wooden version, but I may paint the upper sections in blue, just for a splash of colour, but I'm not making a final decision on this until its built.

I hope to fit the whole thing on a 12" x 8" base. Plastic sheet will allow me to scribe in the logs/planking without having to actually build log walling.

The domes from the link provided by Tarnegol are not quite what I want - which is longer and slimmer. I might just have a go at turning them myself.
This weekend may see me knocking up a DIY lathe in the shed - there may be blood involved  ;)

A wooden frame made by me, a drill held down with rubber bands, fast spinny bits, and sharp pointy things. What can possibly go wrong?  :D

I did onion domes a decade ago (!) with turned decorative bits (small wooden drawer pulls, basically) and Milliput for a 28mm Russian church and they came out very well and durable - still got the church!

Unpainted shot that shows the construction nicely: http://www.warbard.ca/2012/01/25/onion-domes-part-one/

Fully finished church: http://www.warbard.ca/2012/02/15/onion-domes-finished/

(one advantage of hosting your own blog for a decade+ - my old projects are much easier to find and share than a harddrive full of photos is!)
