[SAGA] Age of Hannibal - Republican Romans
« on: February 02, 2023, 11:16:23 AM »
Hi everybody !
New year, new project !

As I have some projects still running but coming to an end (mainly WW2 and dark age projects), I have decided to start a new project.
As my friend Durutti seems to be a great fan of Hannibal and his Carthaginans, I have to start a Roman army.

So here are the first test models (Victrix for infantry, and Aventine for cavalry).
From left to right : lord on foot, triarii (guard), principes (warrior) and velite (levy) :

My blog, for personnal and commission work, and sometimes other things too => http://studiocaillou.blogspot.fr/

My very first Wargames army came about for similar reasons. A classmate (I was 11 &
it was 56 years ago) one Stephen O'Leary (AKA Oscar) kept rabbiting on & on about
a geezer called Hannibal during history lessons. Really, just to annoy him I did my
first independent research.
The 'wonderful' Carthaginians lost the 1st Punic War, & the 2nd, and the 3rd
(4th don't really count, but they lost that too) all to the Romans!!! I had to get me some.
It being the 60s Airfix was my pocket money choice.
I didn't know that Airfix Romans were NOT Republican, in all the books (school/library)
if they showed illustrations of Legionaries it was Early Imperial.
Still it was MY first Wargames Army.

Ah nostalgia, it ain't what it used to be.  lol lol lol

I will follow your progress with interest.

I had the crush on Scipionic Romans too, and nothing available in 1970s South Africa but those ghastly Airfix figures. I still tremble at the memory.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Agreed, those are exceptionally well done! Beautiful tones in the reds, yellows and skin.

Thanks guys.
The shields are bit time consuming, but I'm happy with the result.
For today, I have finished the centurion and the first velite :
