Building better worlds: Hadley's Hope - made of wood
« on: February 07, 2023, 08:23:40 AM »

I have finished a huge task that I was over since last summer when I met another LAF member who sold me a huge lot of lasercut plywood kits from Fantasy Arc, released in a 2014 kickstarter. I picked them up on a motorway services layby near Oxford.  :D Now I know what SERENDIPITY means...
I had already obtained the first few in a second hand starter set as well in 2016, but those weren't by far what would be needed to replace the cardboard floor tiles from the AvP boardgame by Prodos. The new deal allowed me to receive almost all the rest to match the layouts for the 10 missions in the rulebook. A few sections had to be built from scratch and leftovers from rooms that weren't necessary for the game (and one cross section is still missing, which was regretfully noticed when the pictures were taken). You may see the mission layouts according to the rulebook (complete with starting zone markers, objetive markers and alien spawning markers) on my blog, but here is some making of:

Fantasy Arc did not provide air ducts, which are an important part of the game. As I didn't want to spoil a three-dimensional terrain with markers for air ducts, I built a few from cut down and converted Necromunda floor tiles by Games Workshop.

Man, that's a lot of corridor!  8)

Must have cost a fortune in PVA alone lol

Will you be doing some hive-tiles as well? With loads of resin goo covering the walls, the occasional colonist in a cocoon, etc?

Playing on those will be awesome I reckon, especially since they've been painted to such a nice standard :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Oh shiny! The view on the picture of the hallway is ace.  :o I can hear my motion detector register a signal!

Even though I have quite a huge AvP collection (bought when Prodos tossed the game off for fractions of its original cost), I never played it. How do the air vents work? Just as terrain for aliens?

Thank you all!  :)

How do the air vents work? Just as terrain for aliens?

Air vents may be passed by miniatures on 30mm bases only (thus no Predators, because all are on 40mm, except their hounds). Face Huggers are the only creatures to end their move in an air vent though!

I like the game very much and played it quite often. Co-operative gameplay (solo rules against the swarm AI) is also great. We already had four USCM players hardly stemming the tide of xenomorphs which randomly spawn from hull breeches each turn...  :o

Solo rules? That is a strong selling point for me. Might have to dust off those old boxes!

Wow!!! That is a real labour of love. It would be fantastic to play on a set-up like that.

As others have said, it is a great set.
If i may a suggestion. Do not put goo on them as you might
Change your mind later on & it would be a pain to remove.

Put your fav mix of goo ( solvent + transparent poly sprue/ Gw necron sprue + flo paint or white glue + flo paint or clear resin + flo paint ) on removable slide on pieces of card/balsa/
Ply wood/mdf.

Thanks for sharing
Would love to build something like that for 15/18mm

This is a really good idea, although probably a bit fiddly to place (and nigh invisible) if it's a wall panel. It would work as a floor panel overlay of course. I think markers will do as well.

Actually it was hard enough to buy and build all those pieces, I won't do doubles as infested versions to replace any. I will rather mark them INFESTED with the goo-bases by Fenris Games that I used for my models. Left Predator on 40mm standard base, right one on an infested base:

Close-up on 40mm Predalien base:

I still have some without models on them...  :D
