More BLAM 09 - Chinese Fantasy *Now with rules attachments!*
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:44:43 AM »
Ok, so since everybody else is posting pictures...

Unfortunately there aren't many that were useable, as I was a bit busy trying to remember rules and not contradict myself (sorry to all players for making it up as I went along in places!).

This was the table set up, anyway:

We managed two games on the Saturday, the first with Kestrel taking the Vampire Hunters, Revford the Undead, and Levi being the Shaolin Monks. This turned out as a victory for the Undead, as the Hunters routed off the table, and a steady war of attrition between the Monks and Undead saw Shaolin's finest eventually taking to their heels in the rotting face of the opposition.

The second game saw Grimm take the Hunters, Whiskyrat lead the Undead and Overlord command the Monks. Even fewer good pictures of this one as it was a fast and furious game with people getting right down to some fierce fighting. The Undead were driven out of the temple, and off the board, which left the rival schools of Shaolin and Wu-dan fighting between themselves, with an eventual victory on points going to Overlord.

Both Vampire Hunter players managed to summon all the Journey to the West characters as avatars to help out their warband, and they got stuck right in as you can see from this pic of Monkey arriving:

and this one of Sandy helping to subdue the Vampire:

Other notable moments from both games included a monumental scrap around the temple gateway:

Some zombies taking a shoeing from the combined might of the Abbot, a living statue and a particularly handy monk:

And a fight on the bridge between the Abbot and the King of Sticks that left the poor monarch flat on his back being trampled as the rest of the Monks ran over him to rescue the villager being menaced by a zombie at the far end of the bridge:

Good times, excellent players, and (I hope) an enjoyable few hours for those involved. Any fudging of rules and mistakes that may have been made I lay firmly at my own door, and hope it didn't spoil anyone's enjoyment of the game.

If anybody has any more pictures of the games they'd like to post up, please stick them in this thread, as I'd really like to see them. I know Kestrel took quite a few that should be really cool.

Thanks for looking!  :)

I really wanted to play this  :'(
The pictures are very evocative, good work there Bob.

Oh, and one question, what rules did you use and where can I get them and can you post details of the scenario please? (3 questions, treat two of them as free bonuses)

No problem.  :)

The rules I used were Games Workshop's Mordheim set, with a few modifications to make them more Chinese in flavour (mmmmmm... hoi sin...). The basic rules can be downloaded free from the Specialist Games section of the GW main site.

Basically, and if I'm being honest, the changes were mostly to the names of things, i.e. the spell Entangle became Iron Eyebrows, or the Witch Hunters from the main rules became Vampire Hunters for the game.

I also made up a few skills to allow the characters a bit more uh, character, I guess. Since Mordheim is a campaign system, you build skills and such over time, but I wanted to cut to the chase with this as a one off so most of the models got some sort of skill or special rule that made things a bit more interesting.

I've tried to attach the scenario to this post, but if it doesn't work pm me your email address and I can send you copies of all the stuff I had printed out to play with (assuming you have Publisher on your PC). Even if you only have the reference sheet that I had with me, you could probably run a decent game even if you'd never played the full one before.

And thank you, I'm glad you liked the look of it, and it would have been great to have you play. Too much to do in a little room, that's the problem!

It was great fun JollyBob, Levi and Kestrel are great fans of all things far-eastern and it included zombies for extra awesomeness.  :)

The pictures don't do the setup justice either, it looked even better in person.

It was a great looking game and I can honestly say it looks even better in the flesh.
The figures are spectacular and the whole set up marvellous.
I am just disappointed I didn't get time to play it.Especially as I really wanted to summon the panda ;)
Awesome stuff Rob. :)

Ok, but if you can't get it sorted let me know and I should be able to convert most if not all of the files to Word, and then attach them.

Man, what an intriguing table to play on. The subject of chinese fantay always tempted me, too!

This really is an ecxellent set-up and the fun of the games really comes across.

I'll second that. It was a lot of fun, even if my men did run off a little earlier in the proceedings than I would have liked. lol

It looked great on the day :-*
The figures were very nice :-*
It was a shame that there were not enough hours in the day to play all the games there. I would have loved to have tried this.
Maybe next year?

Another comment to add to the 'I wish I'd had time to play that' box. The whole set up looked great on the table (those Black Hat minis really are lovely), the hand-outs were fab, and everyone else gaming it seemed to be having tremendous fun.

I guess BLAM is going to have to be a whole week next year so everyone has time to get a go...

Thanks again fellas.  :)

I don't mind bringing it again next year if that's what people want, but I've already started planning for a Flash Gordon style slice of Pulp.

Now where can I get a Space Pope...?
 ;D

EDIT:For them that's interested, Matakishi has asked me for more details about the game, so I will be collating some of the stat sheets etc and reformating others so I can attach them to a post on here for people to download should they want them.

I will of course announce their availability with a fanfare and possibly noodles.
