Recently had a try out of Valour and Fortitude using Little Wars TV Montebello scenario. The rules are very tightly written and words count. Having run through twice, still made a couple of mistakes - but I think I've got there now.
The rule mechanisms mean that large battles can be fought without getting bogged down, and one thing that appealed was that reinforcements arriving from off table can actually have an influence on the battle since the movement rates are significant, so battle is joined and key areas contested rather than spending the gaming session moving figures across the table.
For a free set of rules available from the Perry's web site certainly worth looking at.
As to the game we played, French turn 6 saw 2 French brigades testing to see if they withdrew, each passing their solitary test and 2 Austrian brigades tested, once twice and the other once. Both failed at which point the Austrians decided to withdraw. As can be seen, this could have gone either way with different dice rolls.
1) French assault O'Reilly's Brigade in and around Rivalta (Prussians proxying for Austrians)
2) French clear Rivalta but are in need of reorganising (slows advance needing to rally)
3) Austrians have quit the field leaving 3 battered French Brigades in control
4) The cavalry figures in the foreground are being removed - mutual destruction - the field looks empty with significant numbers of Austrians having been removed
