Maccabean Revolt in 28mm?
« on: December 04, 2023, 05:02:19 PM »
Any suggestions for figures for this conflict?
Please

Obviously later peltast or Thureophoroi type figures.
I’m a fan of Gripping Beast, Polemarch range.
Plus Victrix.
What about the guerrilla types of troops?

Were all the soldiers effectively ‘Hellenised’
So basically I would be building a light infantry late Greek list, in appearance?

Cheers

The digital files from Wargames Atlantic look promising too, Greek and Thracian peltasts.

Take a look at The Miniature Page. Type in Maccabean and you will find about 17 threads or discussions.

Tim, I've dug out my venerable 1982-era "Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars" book by Duncan Head. He has one page on the Maccabeans plus some plates. From what I can see most of it is based on fragmentary text plus guesswork. According to him most troops were light, but there were cavalry plus some troops who did take on a phalanx so may have been heavier. His pictures are drawn from later Bar-Kohhba era finds. They show a slinger in tunic and cloak, and a soldier armed with short spear, javelin and Thureos. The light cavalryman is shown just in tunic and cloak, with a few heavier in classic hellenistic kit but with lamellar armour. Head admits this latter drawing is pretty speculative. If you want some more "inspiration" Osprey's "The Army of Herod the Great" has some nice illustrations albeit from a later period, but it is actually this periods that Head is sometimes copying.

I've seen some "ancient Israelites" on Etsy (3d printed I imagine) that are probably better suited to this (or some kind of ancient-fantasy game) than Judges-1st Temple period.

Also I love the timing of this! Chag Urim Sameach folks!

Tim, this is an old project i started for small skirmishes. This is my personal view of the type of fighters i converted. Maybe it gives you some ideas.

This period really is crying out for some 3D printed models.  Allen Curtis has some good thoughts on their appearance- I'd imagine they are still on TMP.

All good stuff, thanks.

I too have been looking at that old WRG book, thinking Victrix plastics with conversions may work.

Mixing in those peltast figures from Wargames Atlantic digital and perhaps the Jewish revolt figures but with head swops from the later Roman types.

Newline Designs has some useful 28mm models. As others state, you can do allot with thureophorai and converted plastic peltasts since at the start most gear was captured from the Seleucid troops. Plus the army was hodge podge of troops from different areas. Many Judean troops served in Successor armies as mercenaries. An under represented army in this scale. But we also have a dearth of info how uniform they would be. Plus they are kind of similar to Thracians in style, good at ambushes but not great in a stand up battle. So that detracts from their marketability as game armies.
