British Civilian Vehicles for Interwar
« on: March 05, 2023, 02:41:19 AM »
Guys, I'm appealing to the hivemind who have more knowledge than I, regarding ideas for civilian vehicles that would have peppered the British landscape during this Interwar period.

Looking for ideas, so I can search up some 1/43 or 1/48 diecasts.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Which part of the interwar period? It's a twenty year timespan after all.

For the 1920s you can't really go wrong with Morris Oxford or the Austin 7. The latter is ideal for the whole period, they staggered on as cabs until after the end of the Second World War. Matchbox/Lledo make/ made both of them. There's a useful three pack of them. The beauty of the Austin 7 is that it was also licence built by BMW so handy for interwar Germany as well. IIRC they used them to put the wood and canvas shells for their mock training tank on BMW Dixie chassis.

Oxford diecasts do an Austin 7 as well if you can't find the older models but you should, they pop up with remarkable frequency second hand.

Ford made Model Ts in the UK so any Model T can be used.

Matchbox did a rather nice Talbot Van as well as its Morris counterpart.

Hardly common but certainly iconic, they also did a 4.5 litre Bentley.

Good start point is to look up the listings for Models of Yesteryear.

Obviously there's a load more out there from other makers but that should get you started on a decent range of passenger and light commercial vehicles.

What Carlos said: Models of Yesteryear by Matchbox have/had a vast war of interwar vehicles. Scale can be variable, but will vary between 1/43 and 1/50.

A couple of examples around the traps:  Model A and AA Ford trucks, which were also common & models made by Lledo etc in various versions.

Off an expired ebay sale.

Morris vehicles were also common.

Thanks gents. Sorry Carlos, should have been more specific. Was looking at the later 1930's. Anyway, this all gives me a good point to start.

A lot of 1920's trucks and vans would have "soldiered on" well into the 1930's.  Look into Corgis, which are often for sale on Ebay, usually at reasonable prices.

Corgi made a very nice Morris delivery truck, in the livery of Thorley's Food For Cattle.

And Model T delivery trucks in several liveries:

I'm not sure what make and model van this is, but Corgi made it in several liveries:

Be careful with the older Corgis, scale is all over the place, as it can be with the Matchbox and Lledo kits.

That last photo is an AEC 508 5 tonner, one of the early progenitors of the Monarch and the famous Matador. Not a small vehicle. If you do a google search  for AEC and the livery names you'll see the model from that particular range is probably closer to 1/64.

Corgi did a later version which looks much larger, judging by the green window box, which are consistent in size. Ah toys, where only the packaging is consistent in size.  lol

Which is why I tend to pretty much ignore the stated scale on boxes.  I go by the "Does it look right?" method of evaluation vehicles for my games....
