Paint conversion - Foundry to Vallejo or AK gen 3
« on: April 24, 2023, 07:01:20 AM »
Hello all,

I've a question for the hive mind.

My collection of foundry paints is nearing its end after a long and mostly good work record. I've managed to replace most with an equivalent colour from dropper bottle based manufacturer, either Vallejo or AK. However, I'm struggling to match the Chestnut triad (No. 53). If anyone has a good suggestion of which colours match best I'd be grateful for the help!

Many thanks,
Ed

I find I am in the same situation, my Foundry paints are either drying up, going 'gooey' or get completely finished. Being in Canada it is expensive to get them shipped over either from the UK or the US (Badger Games stock them) so I am gradually phasing them out to be replaced by Vallejo and Reaper Triads.

My local gaming store stocks Vallejo, Scale 75 and now AK Interactive but I do not see much difference in Scale 75 and AK to use them instead of Vallejo or Reaper.

I came across this link that might help finding alternative triads https://balagan.info/vallejo-triads-three-colour-shading-with-vallejo-model-color-paints

Loki's Great Hall has a number of tutorials using VMC to paint horses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ill_oZAMbG8

I also found this https://mythostransmissions.blogspot.com/p/paint-comparison-table.html?m=1 but not alternative colours for Chestnut :-(

Cheers,

Graham W

About AK, I feel their paints are soooo nice to use. So smooth and easy to use. Their white is the best I have ever used. Simply perfect. I am slowly replacing a lot of my paints with AK, top notch.

I've been adding a lot of AK to my collection as well.  Great stuff.  I still prefer a few Vallejo colours, but AK has a massive range and I've been impressed so far.  I actually gave away my ProAcryl stuff to my buddies.

Very happy with Vallejo but I use the Model Colour which is heavily suited to WW2 and the Panzer aces colours as well. Not ventured towards AK yet.

Hi all,
AK paints are certainly great. I'm not sure I'd throw out good paints, but worth buying when needing a restock.

Mindenbrush, thanks for the links. It's kinda frustrating and if I had three time I'm sure I'd be very tempted to pull together a colour chart for the hobby. But sadly I'm not time rich at the moment  :?

Best,
LS
