Finished some rocky outcrops for the table. They are repainted Galeforce 9 'Battlefield in a box' outcrops. Originally, they were sandstone/desert. I repainted them, used a bunch of washes then applied some woodland scenic folk and gamer grass tuffs, bracken and ferns.

This 'large' rocky outcrop was fun to paint, a few washes brought out the character of it.

I think this was my favour of the outcrops.

I've got a whole bunch of trees sitting on the workbench to finish next.

Very nicely done. The dark grey rocks against paler soil look very good.

Only just seen your stuff. The rocks look good but I think the cabins on p1 ate outstanding, especially once they're on the board with trees etc.

Those rocks came out great.  Very useful with loads of character.

Oldskoolrebel's Workbench- More Trees, set ups and British
« Reply #21 on: October 22, 2023, 04:10:31 PM »
Over the last week or so, I've continued working on this project. The plan is to use this terrain for F&IW and fantasy, so naturally, I need more trees! Twenty-six of the buggers. There are the woodland scenic armatures, with foliage clusters glued onto 40mm bases.

To keep them in some order on the tabletop, I another five terrain sabot bases from Oshiro. These are lovely and well-designed to allow a dense thicket of trees. To provide some contrast with my other sabot bases, I used some cork bark and milliput to create an uneven surface. I'm not sure if this will actually be useful during play; however, it definitely adds some visual interest. They were finished using my usual ground recipe, flock/tuff mix, and Gamer's Grass tufts and laser-cut plants. I'm pleased with the results.

For the rocks, I used a recipe that I've been experimenting with- a base coat of charcoal, followed by a drybrush of VMC German Camo Brown/Grey, VMC Basalt Grey, VGC Cold Grey, then washes of brown and Citadel Athonian Camoshade, followed by a final very light drybrush of bone. It's much quicker than it sounds, and it gives a result that I'm really happy with!

I was keen to see how it all looked on the table, so I set up the board I use. It's 90cm x 90cm, ideal for skirmishes- however, I might need to upgrade to a 120cm x 120cm for Muskets and Tomahawks. I wanted to see how much coverage I could get, so I set up with only the trees I had; as you can see, I'm short of a few trees. I've also not got as much coverage as I'd like.

Throwing on a few miniatures and the rock sections gives a better idea of what sort of coverage I can get. For Muskets and Tomahawks, I feel that I need more coverage. Although the two larger rocky outcrops/cliffs definitely help to make the table seem busier.

Finally, I've included some gratuitous shots of some of the small British forces I have for M&T. The rangers and the majority of the Mohawks are from Galloping Major. Beautiful miniatures. I love how much character is in the sculpts; sadly, I can't claim the paint jobs as they were a commission.

The plans now are to finish another 15 trees. I've ordered another couple of sabot bases to hopefully add more ground cover. I've also got two old ruined log cabins from an older project, but need to be rebased and repainted. I've also got some fantasy miniatures to finish.

Now that is how to make forests!  :-*

I've done a couple up in a kinda similar fashion but not as well as yours. It allows me to take out the obstructing trees when a unit enters into it.

Really nice terrain you have put together there.  ;D

Thank you very much Ray; I really like the tree bases. Ideal for the exact situation that you describe! Plus, they help to stop the trees getting knocked over. You know how clumsy us wargames can be!

Tonight I finished off some more trees, sixteen of the buggers. Having now covered myself in superglue, stuck my fingers together and am covered in foliage, I can honestly say that I'm now done with the tree armatures... until I found another four squirrel away!  :-[ D'oh!

I am particularly fond of this signpost. It probably won't get much use in F&IW games, but I imagine using it quite a bit in fantasy games.

My next project is rebasing and repainting these old, ruined Hovels log cabins. I'm not 100% sure what I will do with them yet; I'm toying with the idea of basing them as a mini-vignette, although I do want to keep them reasonably utilitarian.
