Pike and Shotte Epic stuff arrived
« on: April 14, 2023, 11:29:08 PM »
It just came in the mail today.  Which is surprising as I was notified it was sent two days ago and I'm in the States.

I didn't expect it until next week, which is a problem as taxes are due here on Tuesday and I've only just started.  I guess the IRS will probably understand that they are late this time given the circumstances.

I just got the starter set and a set of the casualties.  I'm sure I'll buy more as time goes on.

Lots of plastic goodies in here.

The figs look nice up close too.

I'm going to get this lot painted up to do the Battle of Adwalton Moor.  I was just there the Saturday before last so I've some idea about how to make the table and so forth.

Hopefully I'll get some painted figures posted soon.

First unit all finished.

I started with some cavalry.  There is less of that in the box but I thought I'd be able to get a unit of that done before a unit of infantry and wanted to get something finished.

The figures are very nice.  Small but with enough detail to be interesting.

There are some places which show up the limitations of plastic, like scabbards that are too thick at the ends, but for figures this small they aren't really intended to be perfect, just look good en masse, which they seem like they will.

I also finished a gun.

Just a little one.

Next up is a unit of Newcastle's White Coats.  I have the pike almost done, just the command strip still to finish but the musketeers aren't even started yet.

Then I might do a bunch of the casualty markers.

Congratulations on your delivery! They certainly seem to have whizzed across the pond.  Can’t believe you’ve got a unit and gun done already! Super speedy and very nice work 👍.

Here are the first pikemen.

The musketeers are primed and on sticks ready to be painted but it might be tomorrow before I get to them.

You are right about the cavalry: the close up photos of unpainted figures show them to be pretty rough but painted and ranked up those flaws are hardly noticeable. I think the only way they could have preserved the front and back detail on the riders would have been if they casted them off their mounts on the same axis as the sprue.

Thanks!

Here is one of the big guns plus a Commander (Newcastle.)

Tomorrow I'll get pics of the first whole infantry unit up.

As promised.

The shot take a lot longer than the pike, as they do at any other scale in which I've painted them.  I'm working on the second unit now and I have twigged a few things that should be time saving.

I'm hoping I can get the shot done for the next unit tonight and then the pike tomorrow and get it based Saturday, but I should probably work on some more corridor pieces for my Paramar game on Saturday instead.

Got another unit of foote done.

Plus some cavalry casualties.

I'm working on another unit of cavalry now.  Hopefully I'll have them done by the end of the day on Friday.

My son, got the Epics too, and is somewhat disappointed by the cavalry (the reins are unconvincing).  The infantry work very well however.  For cavalry, he bought Steel Fist's excellent figures, which fit quite well with the Pike and Shotte Epic figures.

I like the cavalry. For the size, and in the number I'll have on the table eventually, the little blemishes will blend into the mass.

Speaking of which, I managed to get another two units of them finished today.

I'm working on a unit of Cuirassiers next.  I'm thinking of doing Roundway Down first and then building forces up for Adwalton Moor since the infantry take so much longer than the cavalry.

I was thinking 7 units of Royalist cavalry vs. 8 units of Parliamentary cavalry and 4 units of foote, plus the guns for each side.

So far I have 1 of the foote units done for Parliament and 3 cav done for the Royalists plus one gun for the royalists.

Next will be Haselrig's horse.

I'm about three weeks in, so I thought I'd post a progress report.

As it turns out I probably should have got more of this stuff, at least more cavalry.

Here are the cavalry I have done so far.

Four units of regular cav and 2/3 of a Haselrig's unit. I have four more guys done for the latter but the starter box didn't contain quite enough figures to finish the unit.

Only got one more gun done, but I'll only need a few more for my first game.

Still only two units of infantry done, but I have another unit sprayed so hopefully I can get to them soon.

You can also see some of the terrain I now have for my games.  I haven't touched the laser cut stuff that came in the starter set, but I'll probably get around to it next week.  I have some molds to make walls and a few buildings out of paper mache` too so I'm going to try to get to those soon too.

Moving along.  I'm hoping I can put on a game by July.
