You could try the free wargame rules online.
I know they have rules covering Vietnam and usually they are fairly straight forward simple rules sets.

I am re-skinning Zona Alfa/Kontraband with a couple of additional cards.

The Kontraband missions can easily  become usable for Vietnam if you remove the fantastical elements.

BOHICA works well solo thanks to the Event Card system.

Not sure what scale you are looking for but for skirmish battles force on force works well solo due to activation dice.  For company/ battalion battles I am currently using battlefront as the base and piquet cards for the activation.  Piquet works great solo but the combat routine is a bit clunky for me.

One Hour Wargames is a great book.  It includes simple rules variants that can be adapted for most themes. They are ideal for quick games or teaching new players.  There are loads of simple scenarios too that will work with most rule sets.  A good source of inspiration even if you don't play the rules.  The book isn't that expensive new and can probably be found second hand.

For Solo play have you seen The Men Who Would Be Kings?  These are a set of colonial rules.  Part of Dan Mersey school based on Lion Rampant.  You could probably adapt the colonial rules, perhaps using ideas in the Xenos rampant Sci-Fi variant book but they have some nice bits for solo or cooperative play in the colonial book that would work with most rule sets and periods.  There is a random way to control opposition units or a procedural set of instructions way.  I think they would both work quite well for Vietnam or African Decolonisation games.  I plan to try them out with my Simbas when I get around to it.

I found this set of rule descriptions useful. I seem to recall found it via LAF so apologies if stealing someone's thunder!

FNG by two hour wargames is exactly what you are looking for, very fun, built with solo in mind too.

Now that's something I'd be interested in doing

Battlespace is a pretty fun game to stage modern firefights.

FNG and battlespace are very nice to play alone.  In FNG you play a squad and BS you play 4 men team.

If you can read and AAR
