Battle of Britain First Game
« on: May 18, 2023, 10:51:47 AM »
Four of us tried the Lacquered Coffins set of rules for a German raid across the White Cliffs of Dover. Apart from Wings of War none of us had tried this type of game before and I have to say we're hooked! The rules are not overly complicated but gave us a good game and they felt right. We'll be giving them another go soon.

The game itself had twelve He 111s with protection from eight Bf 109s heading for a raid which were intercepted by nine mk1 Spitfires and nine mk1 Hurricanes, with the objective of the Germans to get as many bombers across the board as possible and the British to Shoot down as many as possible.
We all flew like novice pilots at the start of the game getting the odd pot shot as the two sides flew through each other but by the end of turn two we were all getting the hang of the rules and starting to maneuver a lot better getting some good shots in. Six bombers made it across the board making it  technically a draw but as the majority of them were damaged I think that tipped it more in favour of the British.
Rules- Lacquered Coffins (available through WargameVault)

More pics.
Green dice show speed, blue show height level and red show damage.

Looks great.

Are the clouds printed on the mat? On some of the photos they look very 3D.

Have you thought about extendable flight stands to show height levels? Not sure how practical this is for lots and lots of planes

I bought these rules after reading Mick's first post. Only had time for a quick perusal, love 'em.
Dicking about with adjustable height stands, load of bollix! A diddy D6, instantly tells you where your kite is. Just get upsun, and let the bastids have it!

Thanks  :) the clouds are printed on the mat. With so many aircraft it would be to easy to knock some over if the stands were much higher.

Thanks for the inspirational post. I'm just finishing a week in Kent having visited Manston, Hawkinge and the Battle of Britain memorial so want to re-try air gaming. I've never found a set of rules which really appeals so at only $10 "Lacquered Coffins" are worth a punt. I also fancy Tumbling Dice's 1/600 aircraft but already have a large force of 1940-42 1/300 French so may give them a run-out first.
